Greetings, adventurers of the Sword Coast! The North is rife with opportunities to find fortune, glory, and fame - from the harsh, frigid climes of the Icewind Dale; to the bloody boulevards of Baldur's Gate (Isn't it odd how bad things always seem to be happening there?); to the rough-and-tumble Savage Frontier... but when it comes to adventuring in style, there is no better choice of setting than the Crown of the North, the City of Splendors: WATERDEEP! With its beautiful location, kind people, and rich history, Waterdeep stands out amongst the Lord's Alliance city-states as the shining jewel of the Sword Coast. Don't believe me? Come here and find out yourself! Waterdeep awaits your visit!
Hello, everyone! I have fallen in love with Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and am dying to run a PbP of it. With that in mind, I am looking for a party of 6 ADVENTURERS to join me on this quest. This is going to be on a first come first serve basis; I will close the thread once we hit 5 people. If this fills up, feel free to PM me asking if you can be added to a waiting list in case somebody drops. Please respect whatever answer you receive.
Please read this list of things to consider before you volunteer to join:
1. All levels of D&D experience are welcome. Whether it is your first time playing or your millionth, you have a place in the City of Splendors! Please be patient with new players.
2. Play nice with your fellow players. Be respectful. If there is an issue, we settle it as quickly and peacefully as possible.
3. Feel free to start brainstorming character concepts, but do not post your character sheet just yet. Wait until you are recruited to do so, so the party can all share their ideas and collaborate. We will be starting at level one and generate stats using standard array, point buy, or rolling (4d6 drop lowest) here in the recruitment thread once everyone is on board. No UA or homebrew, please. Stick with these resources: Player's Handbook, Xanathar's Guide, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Volo's Guide to Monsters, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (optional features included; run feats from Tasha's by me first). Additionally, I will allow wizard characters to take dunamancy spells and subclasses from the Wildemount guide.
As far as races go, please stick to things that are in the Forgotten Realms setting. You may use Tasha's customized lineage rules. If you are dying to play a unique species like changeling, shifter, vedalken, or anything like that, talk to me and we can potentially work something out. If you need inspiration/information about the Forgotten Realms, there is a great wiki here.I am no expert myself and refer to it often to brush up on information about people, gods, locations, etc.!
Keep in mind that Dragon Heist features both combat and social/RP challenges as you make your character. As part of our session 0 planning, we will decide what season this adventure takes place in, as it will affect the events of the adventure. I am considering using Roll20 for maps during combat so we can keep clear track of positions in combat. It is free to make an account if you do not have one.
Also no evil alignments please. I find they do not work well in a group dynamic. Anything on the good and neutral spectrum are completely okay.
Adventures tend to start cleaner when everyone already knows each other rather than just 'five strangers join together because the DM said so.' So as part of character creation we will be discussing character connections as a session zero. You do not all have to be best friends with each other (you certainly can be!), but you should at least know one another. You also do not all have to be from Waterdeep, but know that this adventure will be taking place in the city.
4. No racism please. Do not make your character hate all [insert race here] because of backstory purposes. Racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, and any attempts at sexual violence will not be tolerated. You may think this goes without saying, but I have played with some crazy people, folks, and I do not want to do it again. Thankfully as far as PbP goes I have never encountered this, so hopefully it stays that way.
5. PbPs are usually pretty slow burn, so have patience. My own schedule is pretty busy (coming up on my final few months of university), but I will do my best to post as often as I can while also not leaving anyone behind. I am in Pacific Standard time (UTC - 08:00). You do not have to be in the same time zone as me to join this.
6. You do not have to be an expert creative writer, but please do your best to use good grammar and correct spelling in your posts.
7. If you have to drop or take a break, just be honest and let me know. Nothing is worse than getting ghosted. I promise I will understand and harbor no grudges. Real life absolutely takes precedence over DnD.
8. Have fun!
Recruitment is first come, first serve. If you have read all the things to consider and believe you can abide by them, then feel free to apply! Please introduce yourself (just your username is fine, no need to share your real name if you do not want to) and tell us your timezone and how long you have played D&D. You can share links to some PbPs you are already a part of as a sort of 'resume' (if you do not have any PbP experience, again, you are still welcome!) and include possible character ideas if you so desire.
If you have any questions, let me know! I look forward to this adventure!

THREAD IS CLOSED - THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! Please message me if you would like to be put on a wait list.
Hey, I've wanted to play this adventure for a while, so I'll be applying.
My time zone is GMT +02:00 but I'm fairly active most of the time. Even during bust days, I'll be able to post at least once, if not more, and I'll tell you if not. I've played in 5e since... Well, almost a year now. I've had one short adventure a few years ago run in 3.5 but I don't really remember much because it ended very quickly. I don't have a character concept yet, but I'm sure I'll find anything. I don't know if I want to post a specific campaign here, but you can look at my profile and see previous posts made by me. I can't guarantee that a single page will show you all about me, but it might give a taste.
Greetings and salutations. I have been eager to play the Waterdeep Dragon Heist as I own the book but haven't touched it since I don't want spoilers.
I am Zegethys, Zeg for short, and am GMT -5 and can post reliably once per day. I've been playing D&D roughly 6 years and been a DM for about 5 of those years.
As for potential character concept, a game I was just in unfortunately fell apart before it could get far off the ground, so I was thinking to perhaps bring that character here? The basic premise is that Mechanically he is a Simic Hybrid, but for flavor and in world purposes he is a Goliath who through some magical mishap (which can be discussed/tweaked easily to fit in better with the group) was turned part squid. Fighter planning to go Rune Knight once we hit level 3. Hope to hear back and look forward to playing ^_^. If I'm not picked good luck and hoe y'all have a good game.
Saving a spot. Just leaving from a Dungeon of the Mad Mage campaign for even more Waterdeep because I can't have enough apparently.
I like completing roles at a party, and druid and fighter already kinda on their way to be made... I'll have to decide.
EDIT: More details! GMT -3:00, pretty frequent player, starting recently. My first time playing any form of TTRPG was here on D&DBeyond in PbP format. Around 3 years ago, now. Here's a link to the aforementioned DotMM game.
Hey everybody! I'm Delta, playing in EST timezone (GMT - 4:00) and post pretty frequently. Been playing for two-ish years. I was thinking of playing an earth genasi, not sure on class at the current moment.
This is one campaign I have really been wanting to play. I've started it several times but never got far due to covid ending the irl attempt and the games on here have fallen though before it got started or right past the first fight....
As of now my vague character concept is a deep gnome rogue or ranger since I know they do some trading with Waterdeep through lore in the novels at least.
Well, that was quick - excellent! Everyone is aboard.
Feel free to discuss characters - looks like we've got a lizardfolk druid, an earth genasi rogue, and a potentially simic hybrid fighter. Gonna have to look up the race and review it, as I am not familiar with it.
I will PM all of you a campaign link. :)

Well, might as well roll. Ability scores: 111210131314.
I have a few ideas, but I'll need to see rolls first. Considering the Rogue/Ranger, Rogue, Fighter and Druid, however, I think I'll go with either Wizard, Artificer or Bard. Not sure yet, though.

I'll take that off your hands, by picking an artificer, then. I was playing an artificer on the campaign I mentioned in my post, so maybe I'll go with something melee-oriented and not the Artillerist I was using before.

Then I guess I'll go Bard. Never played one, so we'll see how it goes, but there's a first for everything.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ability scores: 14121216918
And point buy it is....
If we need a more melee based character I can go Paladin or Hexblade Warlock since those are the class that I've not gotten a chance to use that I am interested in at the moment.
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention with my rolling stats rules: For natural rolls, you cannot roll higher than 16 or lower than 8. This makes sure nobody is stuck with a four while also ensuring no one has a +5 modifier in a stat at level 1 because they rolled a nat 18.
Racial bonuses apply after rolls, so if you roll a 16, you can still bump it up to a 17 or 18 using your racial bonuses. But no higher than that. So Delta, would you mind bumping that 17 down to a 16?

Sounds like fun to me.
In terms of a broad character concept, I'm thinking of a druid living in the sewers of Waterdeep, probably lizardfolk.
Ryndar Shadowsbane - Lvl 3 Eldarin Fighter | Kassar - Lvl 2 Lizardfolk Druid (Circle of Stars) | Finnegan (Finn) Taggert - Lvl 1 Human Cleric (Peace Domain) |
Verdan Schmidt - Lvl 2 Half-Elf Bard | Grithik - Lvl 5 Deep Gnome Warlock (Celestial)
