How is it confusing - I mean you chose to read one sentence and not even bother with the rest of the ability:
Once on each of your turns, immediately after you hit a target within 30 feet of you with an attack and deal damage to it with a weapon, you can expend one Psionic Energy die, rolling it and dealing force damage to the target equal to the number rolled plus your Intelligence modifier.
I didn’t ignore you but it specially explains what the strike does. You chose to hang onto one word and pretend the rest of it meant nothing. Propel does NOT only mean range. Plenty of things are propelled while being held.
sorry you don’t like what I said but the words are crystal clear on the page. You add extra damage when you got someone within 30ft of you. End of story. No confusion when you actually read an ability.
: to drive forward or onward by or as if by means of a force that imparts motion
You are correct that the word “propel” implies “motion.” The flaw in your logic likely stemmed from equating motion with range. An airplane may have a “propeller” but that propeller doesn’t shoot that plane forward like a catapult, it instead pulls it forward while staying attached to the plane. (Ships don’t technically have “propellers,” they have “screws,” but it’s basically the same thing as airplanes except replace “pull” with “push.”)
An axe is propelled through the air by the arm that swings it exerting force on that axe. If there is sufficient force and any release whatsoever, then that propulsion will result in some kind of range. (The amount of force, and the timing & execution of that release dictate how much range.) If there is no release then there will be no range, but the arm is still propelling that axe.
The psionic strike is confusing me. "Psionic Strike. You can propel your weapons with psionic force."
Does this mean you can make ranged attacks with your weapon using your mind? Propel makes me think of movement.
The rest of the ability is clear in stating that this ability does not change the range of your existing weapons since the ability can only be triggered "immediately AFTER you hit a target within 30 feet of you with an attack and deal damage to it with a weapon".
Further to this the psionic strike may be misleading. In one location on my character sheet in dnd beyond it is a ranged attack within 30 feet. This you roll to hit with your intelligence modifier. Do you need a weapon or is it like a force missile dealing 1d6+Int mod of damage no weapon needed.
In the other location it is on a completed melee attack hit with a weapon you add the damage automatically when you choose to expend your psionic die.
In conclusion, my question is do you need a weapon?

Yes. The ranged attack with 30 feet is just to show how much damage the ability does, and from how far away you can do it, but you still need to hit a weapon attack within that range to use it.
In general, trust the the actual written rules for abilities much more than the way they show up on character sheets.

Not only is Psionic Strike not a ranged weapon attack, it's not even extra damage affected by critical hit. It's a seperate instance of damage following an attack.

Or is it saying that you can use your mind to hit harder? Empower would have been a better choice of word if this was what they were going for.
Anybody have an official rules clarification?

It isn't limited to melee, but it is for hitting harder.
I mean you chose to ignore how I said propel makes me think of movement, so I guess we are even. Thank you for your snark.
Thank you for clarifying.
