Hey people, so here is the thing I am dming my second campaign and for the most part im going to create most-all of the monsters and right now im making a beetle but according to the rules I dont know how to classify it, according to the rules it would be either a Beast or a Fey but they don't fit well in my opinion, so i wanted to get multiple opinions here to better understand the creature classifications.
It is basically natural, just big, small, or otherwise rolled gently in suspension of disbelief? Is it essentially nonsentient, without a clear language or culture? Then probably, Beast.
Is it associated with the Feywild, or specifically tied to natural spirits similar to the way dryads are? Then possibly Fey, especially if it has innate magical abilities or spellcasting, though cases could also be made for Celestial, Monstrosity, Elemental, Fiend, or Aberration, depending on its precise origins and powers.

🎵I'm on top of the world, looking down on creation, wreaking death and devastation with my mind.
As the power that I've found erupts freely from the ground, I will cackle from the top of the world.🎵
Fey creatures are tied to the Feywild, so it would be unatural and fey-like, from Blink Dog to Dolphin Delighter having teleportation powers.
Best example is Giant Goose which a-priori would think to be Beast but are Fey because ''Not only are giant geese from fey stock significantly larger than ordinary geese, but they also have two magical properties that make them even more valuable: their honk is a powerful defense against intruders, and they can lay eggs with shells of pure gold.''
Or Giant Lynx which are Fey ''Though they're often mistaken for mundane cats, giant lynxes are magical creatures with origins in the snowy woodlands of the Feywild.''
Or Giant Ox which are Fey often ''with shaggy hide, with vibrant colors, such as sky blue or deep violet.''
Or Giant Ram which are Fey which their ''fleece stores magical energy by absorbing ambient magic and drawing power from spells. While a ram is alive and unshorn, it uses its fleece's magic for self-defense, channeling the power it absorbs into a magical blast to drive off predators.''
Or Grinning Cat which are Fey which can become Invisible for example.
So Feywild insect creature may be Fey particularly if they have unusual bright or light-emitting appearance, some magical power and or higher intelligence and likely mischievous nature.
So what do you have in mind will better indicate wether they should be Beast or Fey.
Beasts are non-Humanoid natural creatures, like horses and wolves, as well as most giant animals.
Fey are creatures tied to the Feywild or the forces of nature, such as dryads, goblins, and pixies.
If it's an unnatural or magically created beetle, then it would be a Monstrosity. If it's a beetle that came from the Feywild, it's a Fey. If it's a mostly normal beetle, it's a Beast.

Need more information.

Depends what insect monsters you have in mind, essentially based on its origin and nature.
Insects are Beast by nature being natural creature wether normal or giant, from Swarm of Insects to Giant Fire Beetle or Giant Centipede.

By 2014 rules I would have said Beast or Monstrosity depending on how big said Insectoid is (see Ankheg wik for example: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Ankheg)
If it's an unnatural or magically created beetle, then it would be a Monstrosity. If it's a beetle that came from the Feywild, it's a Fey. If it's a mostly normal beetle, it's a Beast.
