Clarification needed: Artificer's Homunculus Servant vs. Monster Manual Homunculus (Telepathy & Senses)

I’m seeking a rules clarification regarding the Homunculus Servant infusion for the Artificer (from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything / Eberron: Rising from the Last War).

One of my players argues that they share a telepathic link with their Homunculus Servant and can perceive through its senses, similar to the version found in the Monster Manual or the Find Familiar spell.

However, looking at the stat blocks, I see two distinct entities:

1. The Monster Manual Homunculus (CR 0): Has the "Telepathic Bond" trait, allowing it to convey what it senses to its master telepathically within the same plane.

2. The Artificer’s Homunculus Servant (Infusion) (from Tasha Book): Its stat block does not list the "Telepathic Bond" trait. It only states that it "understands the languages you speak" and obeys your commands.

My questions are:

• Are these two considered completely different entities regarding their abilities?

• Does the Artificer’s Homunculus Servant lack any form of telepathic communication or sensory sharing by RAW (Rules As Written)?

• If there is no telepathy, how is an Artificer supposed to receive scouting reports from the servant (considering it can understand languages but cannot speak)?

I want to make sure I’m not stripping away a core class feature, but I also want to avoid giving the Artificer a "telepathic drone" that bypasses the limitations of the Find Familiar spell.

I really appreciate the distinction you made between the 5e (Tasha) and the 2024 (5.5e) versions. It turns out my group has indeed transitioned to the 2024 rules, and your explanation perfectly highlights why my player was insisting on the telepathic link.

Since the 2024 version of the Homunculus Servant explicitly includes Telepathy (1 mile), I will definitely allow it at my table. It’s a game-changer for scouting Axeholm, but at least now I have the official ruling to back it up!

By the way, you are mistaken — the 2024 Monster Manual Homunculus appears to have been critically nerfed. The “can magically convey what it senses to its master” clause has been removed from the Telepathic Bond trait. That appears to me to mean that it is no longer effectively unlimited planar scrying, but unlimited planar telepathy (communication).
