Hello there fellows!! I'm a newbie here at the DM's Plane of existence, and in my campaign I'm planning a villain that is a medusa in disguise... So here is the question that I would be really grateful if anyone could answer :
Would the Hat of Disguise nullify the medusa's gaze effect? So that she wouldn't be able to petrify other creatures through the mask, and wouldn't have to avert her gaze whenever there were some kind of reflection.
Even if it nullifies it, I think she would still avert her gaze whenever there were an unexpected mirror around, and I bet she would at least cover her chamber's mirrors... lol Anyways, my original idea was to use something similar to Agatha's mask from Drizzt's tales instead of the Hat of Disguise, but I think they are pretty much the same aside the fact that Agatha's mask is more powerful (with less restrictions to the shape and size), right?
All right, so she will be able to petrify creatures even with the Hat of Disguise awesome! Since she can control her gaze it will be perfect! >=) Thanks a lot filcat!! =D
Just to point out, "When a creature that can see the medusa's eyes starts its turn within 30 feet of the medusa," is a stipulation on the medusa ability, so if her disguise self was covering her actual eyes with false ones (or making even normal appearing eyes slightly higher or lower. Then it would prevent the observer from seeing the medusa's eyes.
Basically if the medusa is disguising her eyes in any way, a creature won't see the medusa's real eyes unless it sees through the hat of disguise.

Hum... Ok, got it. So, she wouldn't be able to petrify other creatures who can't see through her disguise unless she drop off the spell/item, right? This just raised another question... Taking that she knows she is in disguise, would this count as a automatic success on the spell DC? Because if it count as a success she would petrify herself upon looking into a mirror. what do you guys think?

" Uh, madam, that's a rather lifelike statue of a warrior in armour that you have in your garden..."
"Oh, silly, that's no warrior - clerics always getting themselves in trouble with that True Seeing spell!"
The use of the True Seeing spell is going to become a little more dangerous from now on! *evil laugh* The problem now is that I'm becoming too attached to her character... lol
You can tell the spell isn't real with an investigation check. This doesn't mean that you no longer see the illusion, just that you are aware it isn't real. So assuming that the eyes could be disguised (a bit iffy on if you could move the eyes around enough to prevent her gaze, the fact you can't change limbs makes me wonder) even if you pass the DC to know the disguise isn't real, you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell it was a medusa and therefore still wouldn't have to risk turning to stone.
However, if you had a spell, or some other means to bypass the disguise completely, then you would have issues. However, I would probably rule if anyone saw you turn to stone they would get an automatic investigation check, in addition to being free to act however the like.

I would say no. Hat of Disguise does give you the spell Disguise self which does not counter-effect the Medusa pietrifing gaze.

You are welcome. If your players beat the Medusa with a mirror, please give them inspiration ;-). It would be epic.
The real question here is, does her leg hair come in the form of little, baby snakes or no?
This is a scary trick.

"We got this, no problem! I'll take the twenty on the left - you guys handle the one on the right!"🔊
That's even scarier!
Especially if she can control her disguise to only show her eyes when she wants (perhaps it includes one of those masks-on-a-stick?)
