Hi folks, First off, just want to say how valuable these forums have been. I'm getting back into D&D after not playing since the late 80's/early 90's, and I'm about to run the Lost Mines of Phandelver for my nephews. These threads have helped me a TON in my prep, so props to all you D&D vets who keep tabs on us newbs.
Okay, here's my question. When a character gains a level, the rules state the following regarding Hit Die:
"Each time you gain a level, you gain 1 additional Hit Die. Roll that Hit Die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total to your hit point maximum."
I'm getting hung up on the word "additional." So, you have a level 1 character with, say, 1d8. You give that character the max at level 1, so he has 8 hp (not including modifiers). Then that character gains level 2, and if I understand things correctly, the player would roll 1d8, and add the result to their character's HP. Let's say they roll a 6. New Max HP is now 14. Repeat for each subsequent level. So, what does "additional" mean in this context? Does it mean you roll 2d8 when you reach level 2 and increase your max HP by that amount, and 3d8 when you reach level 3? That seems crazy. I know I'm missing something here
The wording " you gain 1 additional Hit Die " has been made to clarify that a character has a number of Hit Dice equal to its character level. This is important when you regain hit points during Short Rests. Now, to determine the number of maximum Hit points al level 2, you just roll the additional hit die. Just the "new" one. So at level 2 you hit points are 8 + 1d8.
Additional hit points are gained with the CON modifier: CON modifier x Level.
Every short rest you can use one of those HD to heal up. A short rest is an hour. So a lvl 4 character can use 2 HD to get 2d(whatever die he normally rolls for HP) back. Since he was lvl 4 with 4 HD he still has 2 HD left after that short rest that he can use later in another short rest.
When you level up you only get 1 new die roll - You don't stack them.
Yep, after a Long Rest you regain all the hit points and all the Hit Dice.
Ah wait. You regain all HP and up to HALF of your max HD.
Aaa you are right. Thanks, I am editing my error.
This is kind of confusing to me. Let me see if I understand:
Let's say I'm 3rd level. This means my Max HD is 3d(whatever), right? Also, let's say I have 15 HP, this represents my Max HP, right?
OK, now I've just battled the meanest creature in the world, and I've suffered 10 points of damage. My HP is now at 5. On a short rest, I elect to use 1 of my HD to regain 5 HP. I'm now at 10 HP and I can still use 2 of HD. Well, it just so happens, this was near my home and I lie down for a long rest. At the end of my long rest, I get the remaining 5 HP back. And I also get the expended HD back.

In the morning, my HP is 15 and my HD is 3.
Am I understanding that correctly?
Correct. And just to extend it a bit, let's say you decided to spend another one of those HD. And you regain 3 more HP. So now you are at 13 HP with 1 HD.
After a long rest, you would fill your HP back up to max (15) and you would regain only 1 Hit Die because you gain half your max (rounded down) over a long rest.
So you'd wake up the next day, full HP, but with 2 HD out of a maximum of 3.

Once again, this is really helpful. Thanks everyone! And thanks for weighing in with your question, InsanityRocks, it was good to get that long rest business cleared up too.

Super! Got it! Thanks! :D
Also, the Hit Die recovery minimum is 1, so if you are a level 1 character, you still get one Hit Die (it probably won't come up, since you'll more than likely level before having to take a long rest as a level 1 character, but thought it was worth mentioning)

Awesome, thanks! That makes a lot of sense. I assume those reset daily/long rest?

I wear pants, short pants.
I also ask a lot of questions; insatiably curious
