Does any official lore mention any ball based sports, such as Baseball, Soccer, or Basket Ball? I ask because i'm creating a spell, and l intend to use a Basketball as a unit of spherical measurement, but l want to know if that would be "lore friendly", or if there's a in universe equivalent.
Well a basketball is between 9.43 - 9.51 centimeters. Think of common things that size in a society that may or may not have spare time and resources for leisure or competitive games. If it is an agrarian society, you would probably link it to a fruit or vegetable. Or if your group crafts a lot, comparison would be for a crafted items such a common censer or bowl, or maybe a small shield like a gladiator buckler.

I am not sure what my Spirit Animal is. But whatever that thing is, I am pretty sure it has rabies!
Goat Ball! In Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, the Wrymdoom Crag Goliaths spend much of their time honing their goat ball skills. It is a sport in which several players stand on stumps or rocks, and the Goat Ball is thrown in by a referee. When you have it, you throw it at other players to try and knock them off their post. Last player standing wins.

Various settings are going to have various ball sports (but few of these are going to be standardized the way modern sporting equipment is).
However, your spell description is aimed at the players, so lore references aren't a good way to give the players information. I'd also suggest not using real-world objects, because, while you might think it's a universally-known size, it's not. If you asked random people off the street to tell you how big a basketball is, you'll probably get at least a 50% variation in people's size estimates. Stick to absolute measures. For the size you're talking about, you probably want "a six-inch radius sphere".

Fair point. That's also the exact reason l decided not to use fruit, such as a watermelon, as a example.
I'm trying to think of something roughly basketball-sized in the game. An ogre's head, maybe?

Also trying to avoid heads, otherwise l might have used "A human skull". But I'm avoiding them cause head size varies.
vitriolic sphere creates a 1-foot diameter ball of acid, which is only a little larger than a basketball

ok, 1-foot diameter sphere it is.

I think there's some kind of ball sport in Strixhaven, but I'm not sure.

The Mage Tower competition in Strixhaven is a ball game, but idk how big the ball is.

I would just make it a 1-foot diameter sphere for simplicity’s sake.
