Hey all, I want to run a Clockwork Soul sorcerer and have most of his background in place but I'm really struggling with how to connect him to Mechanus.
So far:
His earliest memories are flashes of bright colors and tinkling laughter. His first solid memories begin when he was around 8 and found himself on the streets where he was quickly inducted into the Thieves Guild, working as a burglar's mate until he began thieving by himself. He has always been very logical (I need money. They have money they don't need. I am able to take it therefore I will). Currently 20 years old, he was recently he was tasked with stealing an object that acted as his arcane focus and unlocked his magical potential. Since this moment he has fled the guild to become an adventurer - I see him as a cross between Spock and a sort of socialist Punisher (without the murdering aspect).
All well and good. The idea being he was stolen as a baby and kept in the Feywild. The problem I am having is his origins before that. The modrons don't seem to be the type to 'interact' with humans the way other immortals might. Ideally, I'd like for him to have been stolen from Mechanus itself but I appreciate that might be hard. I cannot find any precedent online for a connection - in fact, any Forgotten Realmers seem to just get put on trial for acting as agents of Chaos.
Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
What are the fey? The wild and carefree personification of the emotion that lies nearest to the material real but not on it. Everything is brighter and more vivid and time an things have more symbolic representation than not.
What are the modrons? The exact opposite of that. Pure order and certainty. To find a defective modron is to destroy it in the name of perfection.
Now that you have these two opposite ends of the spectrum, the easiest thing to do is have one act as an agent of one force, and place them in the other as a way to corrupt the opposite end of the spectrum.
The modrons would place a clockwork soul in the fey realm to try and eventually be a sleeper agent of order, and the fey would steal a clockwork soul to corrupt it and keep it from being an agent of perfect order.
Perhaps it was an experiment to see how resilient the blood of order is. Or perhaps you were a failed experiment dropped in the garbage. Or you lean into the Spock concept and one of the Inevitables could not help but somehow fall in love with a human, creating various descendants, some of which were brought to Mechanus as it was the logical choice.

"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
Hmmm A Clockwork Soul with a Fey background ... Touched by Chaos and yet Order by blood.
One issue is the only Creatures on Mechanus are Modrons or giant ants That being said I got some Ideas.
First: The whole thing started off as a joke, A Handful of Fey wanting the tightly strung Modrons to Loosen up a bit, So the Fey grabbed one, or a dozen or two Modrons. The Fey Attempted to "teach" the Modrons how to party, revelry and most of all dance, This did not go well. With no other choice the fey brought them to an Archfey for proper instruction. After a few attempts to teach them the Fey way the Archfey lost his temper and used his magic to cast True Polymorph on all of them turning them into more pliable beings, And a grand Party was thrown, Due to time being more of a suggestion the party lasted a while. This event did not go unnoticed by Primus who sent an small army to recover them. The Fey who already got all the fun they could, And not wanting a war over harmless pranks ejected the transformed People into the material realm.
Second: "You" got kidnaped as a Child as Fey are known to do, However the Fey stole the wrong Child. The fey were suppose to grab the kid 2 doors down, the one with the Teal Door not the turquoise one. Now Mechanus / Primus is cosmically speaking OCD about "Everything needs to be in its place", And your are way out of place cosmically speaking. So a Modron was sent and brought you back(ish) see the where was right, the when was wrong. Time in the Feywild is more of a suggestion, So the humble village your from is now a Major City.
This one is has no connection to Mechanus and focuses on the Fey turning the clockwork into a luck bloodline: Your "parents" made a deal with a Fey. What was the Deal? Gold, food protection? It doesn't matter. For soon after your birth the fey whisked off to the Feywilds.
Once there your Fey Parent(s) taught you Luck Magics. With this nudging fate to your benefit you did something. Did you overstep at a dinner party?, Maybe you overly boasted Or did you take something you shouldn't of? Regardless something bad happened and your luck magic saved you, Sort of. Striped of memory and Seemingly your magics a small child of 8 years finds himself Cast out of hearth and home, left in the middle of the street.
How about being influenced by the March Hare from Alice in Wonder Land? Spin all the "Law" references to "Chaos", some ancestor attended tea time with the hare and now a little taint of the Hare's madness/opbsession with time is filtered through the family. Maybe use spells like Haste, Slow and Scatter to represent the time side of things using more of a battlefield control style of play over a blaster. The arcane focus you have could be a pocket watch made from a modron and its intricate gears and mechanisms are what give you the clarity to function without going full "mad as a March Hare".
EDIT: a way of looking at it this way would be: Normally you would have become a Wild Magic Sorcerer as you can;t manage toe Hare's chaotic influence/obessessive amdness but the modron arcane focus twists things just enough for you to see/control the madness and use it to influence thigns around you as a Clockwork Soul Sorcerer.
Ya know through magic maybe they had a love child, before returning to mechanus for reprogramming.

I really really like this.
I just want to say that this is my fave and I may have to steal even though I had nothing to do with the OP.

Feel free to build on it if you would like to, I was also thinking of using Hold Person/Monster spells and referencing them as a very localised Time Stop effect on the target.
Another idea came to mind for the OP though which is to play it like the Master from Dr Who. The Fey heritage is the Time Lords on Gallifrey, which you could tweak a little to be the "Galli Fey", Galli being a small island on which this branch of Fey critters dwell. The Arcane Focus becomes a form of sonic screwdriver, the Clockwork Soul powers are from looking into the "Time Vortex" and by playing it like the Master instead of the Doctor you get to be as evil, good, cunning and kind as you see fit to tie in with the OP Spock/Punisher motif.
Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone. I will pass these on to the DM and perhaps I'll get a chance to investigate my past. I also just realized Planescape is coming out soon, so that might be useful in fleshing out the details.
Thanks again!
