I am one of those lucky ones who`s (Legacy) campaign goes all the way to LVL 20. Playing a Divination Wizard, currently at LVL17, ofc I took Wish and True Polymorph. My first 9th lvl cast was True Polymorphing my Simulacrum to an Adult Gold Dragon (Legacy) notably for it`s Change Shape ability. This indeed does come up, I was already forced to even fight in the changed form once. What I went with was the Githzerai Anarch.
Although it was OK, I found it to be suboptimal for the lack of range attacks. One more that I like is the Drow Arachnomancer, but didn`t use it yet.
Does anyone have ideas for Humanoid/Beast monsters (Level 20 and lower) that I can use for the Change Shape?
Planetar is a classic one - with high maneuverability, healing and capable damage dealing abilities.
Balor is also pretty good, flight, unlimited teleport, 30ft reach, high damage, plus Aura for AoE damage, just be careful about it burning your own party.
Beholder is probably your best ranged attack option, but again, requires care to avoid negatively impacting your own party.
Storm Giant is a safer ranged damage dealing option.
Though if your DM allows you to use the transformed creature's spellcasting there are several other good options.
Oh oops just realized you want Humanoids, then probably your best bet would the the Oracle of Strixhaven.

Yeah only humanoids and beasts.. But thanks a lot, this seems very good. Not sure if the Paradoxy and Teleport features count as "class features" (dragon can't use those). But if not this is pretty great! Only down side is AC 12 and I guess it couldn't cast the Mage Armor, which is a spell it has, but I think all the spells would be considered as class features...Correct me if I'm wrong here. Anyways, thanks, this is a really nice option, I think I'll try it next time.
The dragon's change shape ability requires the new form to have a challenge rating no greater than the dragon's challenge rating. Since player characters don't have challenge ratings, it cannot become a player character in this way. Your player cannot revert to his original form in this way, but can assume the form of humanoid creatures with an appropriate challenge rating.
Additionally, the dragon's change shape ability states that the dragon maintains its hit points, hit dice, and mental scores regardless of what it shape changes into. Your player doesn't gain any extra HP bars. https://routerlogin.uno/
I suggest reading the adult golden dragon statblock again to make sure you understand how this ability works.

With all do respect.. What the ... are you on about??? If you tell me, than I want double that dose, because it seems to cause potent hallucinations :D Please read my comments FULLY and try to understand them, before accusing me that I should read the statblocks etc... lol. Whoever talked anywhere about someone becoming a player character?? And who talked about gaining extra HP bars? Only you... If you read fully I also noted that I have Wish....
To summarize AGAIN and perhaps more detailed now (which I wanted to avoid to not cause any confusion).
I have a 17th level character that casts simulacrum on himself, and than uses the 9th level spell slot to cast True Polymorph on the Simulacrum to turn it to an Adult Golden Dragon. This is a legitimate way of playing in most campaigns that ever reach those levels. Also because of the nature of our campaign we actually fight with Ancient Dragons every fifth fight. My plan for the future is to Cast Wish to instantly replicate the effects of the Simulacrum spell and cast it in the middle of the fight on one of those Ancient Dragons (CR24) who can use Shapechange. This is exactly why I have asked for tips that would be of even higher levels than 17. And as far as I know level 20 is as far as Humanoids go in 5e (might be wrong here).... I understand the ADULT gold dragon can use it to only shapchange to level 17 and below, but since I already created the thread, why not understand good Humanoid/beasts options also for the possible Wish/Simulacrum combo on an ANCIENT one as I explained which btw is CR 24..... Believe me when I say I`ve studied a ton of monsters, but wanted some advice specifically for Humanoids. And good that I did, the advise I got will come in handy.
.... Now, if I may, again with respect... How many characters did you have of levels 17 and beyond since you are so clever?
And being that you`ve suggested something to me, please allow me to do the same. Your comment came as very arrogant and unkind to me. Maybe that wasn`t your intention, which I sincerely hope, but my suggestions is to try to have more empathy and understanding towards others in your communication, that way maybe you can avoid seeming as a jerk to others.
To be honest this is the opposite behavior of what I`ve found in these forums so far, everyone is so nice here... But alas, I guess, jerks can be found everywhere...
Have a great day. Hopefully even with a LVL 17 character someday, which btw is AWEEEESOOOMMMMEEE!
