I have the itch to roll up a proper Wizard from start-to-finish (my previous Bladesinger having been introduced mid-campaign, and only temporarily).
Bladesingers are given light armor proficiency, and may select a one-handed weapon to use during their Bladesong.
I find myself drawn to three "styles" for a Bladesinger...each with their strengths & weaknesses.
The first choice is scimitars...and I enjoy the style personally. Proficiency with scimitars allows for easy dual-wielding, as the weapons properties allow them to be held in both hands, and frankly, the elegant swordplay seems very elvish. Later on, "Shadow Blade" has much synergy as a finesse weapon, and "Song of Victory" (if reached) allows for stacking of Intelligence-bonus damage with bonus action attacks.
This method, in practice, benefits from "War Caster" for easy two-handed combat with magic...and also "Mobile" (though, to be frank, this feat just makes sense for a Bladesinger to have).
A scimitar could also just as easily be single-handed for when you want your spells or bonus action free.
On the other hand, a whip proficiency allows for safe thwacking from a distance, and with "Spell Sniper", could pair well with "Booming Blade" for crowd control...this has the heavy toll, though, of ignoring Extra Attacks.
The third choice is a Quarterstaff proficiency (which Wizards already get; which lessens the stress of choice)... wielded one-handed, this gives the Bladesinger interesting "bashing" potential with their bonus action...the reaction attacks is somewhat less useful for a Bladesinger, as they NEED that reaction for "Shield", "Absorb Elements" or "Song of Defence".
Quarterstaffs also use Strength, so...unless you're making a muscle wizard...
Hmph...it's a decision with many angles.
I'd be curious if others have had positive results with a certain weapon choice for a Bladesinger.
I would use a rapier, you can use dexterity for attack and damage, it is also one handed so no need to invest in the war caster feat. Plus fencing with a rapier is very elegant so it fits the elf theme of bladesingers
The min max choice is rapiers. The thematic choice that makes the most sense imo, is scimitars.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Whip. Even without Booming Blade it is a far underrated weapon. Plus its fun to play a character like Indiana Jones only with Fire Bolt instead of a gun.

Thanks for my new character
My pleasure. If UA is on the table then I highly recommend considering the Wild Talent and Slasher feats.

I'm not saying you should...but you could take a level of monk to make your staff dex based. Just a suggestion.

I've got 2 bladesingers that I play. For one, he's multiclassed with arcane trickster so my choice for weapon was scimitar on the off hand chance I found a scimitar of speed or vorpal scimitar in adventurers league. When I got into tier 4 AL play I DID find myself a vorpal scimitar. Now on the (very) rare occasion when I get to play that character, he zooms around the battlefield lopping off heads.
On my other bladesinger I decided to go with a whip and spell sniper so I can use booming blade/green flame blade at 10 feet. He's my elven indiana jones (archaeologist background) and uses Melf's minute meteors as his bonus action, then action whipping enemies and running away.
