Antimagic Susceptibility. The armor is incapacitated while in the area of an antimagic field. If targeted by dispel magic, the armor must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against the caster's spell save DC or fall unconscious for 1 minute.
False Appearance. While the armor remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a normal suit of armor.
Actions
Multiattack. The armor makes two melee attacks.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage.
Description
This suit of magically animated plate armor clamors as it moves, banging and grinding like the vengeful spirit of a fallen knight.
What?
Should be vulnerable to electrical attacks.
Can you wear the armor if it dies?
It's in the monster manual. Unless it has specific immunities against said spells, you should be able to target and deal magical damage just fine.
One word. CastleVania Campaign.
i love it when people say 1 word (inswert multiple words here)
That's what dlemckert said. Usable armor means wearable. You would just have to repair the damage to the armor.
I'm imagining the boss for the first session to be an Animated Armor with an Animated Greatsword (Flying Sword with GreatSword stats). Grapple possibilities from the armor, the greatsword is slower moving then an average flying sword, but hits like a truck. After taking enough damage, it's rendered into wearable, but heavily damaged armor that needs repair work and the sword has damage to it as well. Problem is, you'd have to fight this thing with very little gear, as you've been kidnapped and whisked away to a small prison with a few cells.
In my campaign we actually have a pc as an animated armor and it's funny to see who wins str checks at times
Should this show up on a Detect Magic? What school would it be, Transmutation?
Great Idea!!! https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/vampire https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/bat
If you use dispell magic, could you just take it apart to kill it?
I had the idea with homebrewing to make this With animate dead, (it does mention its possessed by a vengeful spirit) and make it one of your minions with animate dead upcast high enough
I added this as an encounter/trap in one of my dungeons when the party comes across an old armory/vault. It is called the "Armorer's Challenge" and I got the idea online from one of those puzzle compendiums (source unknown).
The vault door is locked and a successful DC 15 Investigation check reveals the mechanism to open it. Entering the room you notice it is filed with discarded pieces of armor along the walls. It all is battered and dented. Most of it useful for nothing more than its material if melted down. Along the eastern wall of the room there are 4 arcane circles and above each circle is a gauntlet hovering in the air.
A successful DC 15 Arcana check reveals it's a levitation spell holding up the gauntlets as well as several other spells that must be triggered by the object being levitated but none of these spells are dangerous. Once inside the circle the gauntlet descends into easy reach of anyone in the circle. Putting on the glove causes the armor scattered around the room to float up for a moment, then fly towards the one who put on the gauntlet. That armor then equips itself onto the character (over any existing armor). Their armor is beautiful and looks awesome, unlike the parts its made from. The character is then locked in their circle by a magical barrier until all other characters in the room are equipped by the room, or all gauntlets are worn. (Each equipped character receives +1 AC until the end of the challenge)
The instant each player is equipped the barriers around the players drop and they are free (a barrier now exists around the exits). At the same instant as the barriers fall each player receives a message straight into their mind "By the Hand of the Victor, the way will be opened." (Roll initiative) Here is where the trap/ puzzle starts
The sets of animated armor will attempt to defeat all the other suits of armor. Let the player with best initiative go first. They take their full turn as normal. However at the end of the characters turn the armor will attempt to attack the nearest armored suit. (Moving 5 feet) and using the characters weapons to make 1 standard attack (using the characters stats, but not abilities or spells). Then it's the next players turn. The suits of animated armor have their own hp and on receiving an attack both the suit and character take the same damage. If a character willingly attacks another suit of armor the suit will not make an attack at the end of that characters turn. (Casting an offensive spell counts)
How to win If the suits hp reaches zero the gem on the gauntlet shatters and the armor drops off of the character and all suits will now ignore that character. If the character becomes unable to fight (zero hp, unconscious) the gem shatters and the armor falls off. The last gauntlet with an intact gem begins to glow with power and the armor changes back into scraps and falling off.
Anyone ever consider using one of these as a homebrew character race? Kinda like they'd be the Lingering Will of a Fallen Knight? (Yes it was Kingdom Hearts that put this idea in my head).
Cool. I can use this for a level one boss fight, maybe.
Give it a sword and shield and it has decent weapon attacks and a 20 AC
I think there should be a higher level version with better armor and attacks. Anyone else with me?
I mean it would be fairly easy to do... the main issue for me is two immunities. I might consider doing this as a race if you got no ability bonus or something. the weakness are large but the weaknesses are boring because it can take you out of combat for a minute. so maybe change that to a couple round stun... turn the immunity to resistance and advantage on con saves vs poison. similar to a warforge.
