Petrifying Gaze. If a creature starts its turn within 30 feet of the basilisk and the two of them can see each other, the basilisk can force the creature to make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw if the basilisk isn't incapacitated. On a failed save, the creature magically begins to turn to stone and is restrained. It must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn. On a success, the effect ends. On a failure, the creature is petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic.
A creature that isn't surprised can avert its eyes to avoid the saving throw at the start of its turn. If it does so, it can't see the basilisk until the start of its next turn, when it can avert its eyes again.
If it looks at the basilisk in the meantime, it must immediately make the save. If the basilisk sees its reflection within 30 feet of it in bright light, it mistakes itself for a rival and targets itself with its gaze.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) poison damage.
Description
A basilisk is a multilegged, reptilian horror whose deadly gaze transforms victims into porous stone. With its strong jaws, the creature consumes this stone, which returns to organic form in its gullet.
Doesn't it say that the creature returns to its organic form in the basillisk's stomach, I presume stomach acid will do it
For DMs trying to make loot, remember : Fresh Basilisk blood cures the petrified condition.
I know I'm quite late, but my solution was to play on the fluff bit of their lore - their bite removes the petrification of the creature so that they may eat it, and half of their damage is poison, when biting - therefore that poison damage is in actuality a cure for the petrification, however delivered through an unusual means.
I actually really like that!! There's rules in the DMG for harvesting poison from a creature, I think I'll use those rules in case my players want to harvest the oil from the basilisk's gullet.
Willowshade oil can be used on characters who have been petrified for under 1 minute
Awaken wouldn't work; it's a monstrosity, not a beast.
It appears to not be immune to the petrified condition, so it would be subject to its own gaze--probably why it references seeing its reflection in the gaze entry, but it isn't as clear as it could be.
when you realize you can target this with the animal friendship spell if you are a mark of handling human
lmao ppl described it to me as a snake with legs.
They're only medium? I always thought they were at least large.
Hi everyone - new DM here. Just had an interesting almost total nerf of a Basilisk by a party - the sorcerer put up phantasmal force spell as a box around the creature, with a mirror as each wall. He was trying to get it so the Basilisk would turn it self to stone. I ruled that since the basilisk wouldn't know what a mirror was (INT 2), what it would see is rival basilisks and direct gaze and attack them. This still effectively nerfed the petrifying gaze, as the basilisk could no longer see the rest of the party - can't lock gaze with and individual was how I read the rules above. I got a few other hits in by having the basilisk bite at the illusions and hitting a party member in melee range. They killed it easily though. Did I get this right? On reflection I'm thinking I might have said that whilst the basilisk "thought" it was locking gaze with the illusion, it actually locks gaze with the party member in that direction. Thoughts?
Legend has it that he's still stuck there to this day.
Imagine getting petrified by one of these and being forced to spend a bunch of gold to get it restored
LOl yes u die if u look at it(r u muggle born?)
im half-blood
Same man the best way to train one is to use a mirror then it’s gaze can’t reach you but you can see it and if all goes bad you can make it freeze itself and heal it later

Adaptable Predators.Such a trained basilisk knows how to avoid meeting the eyes of those its master wishes to protect from its gaze, but it makes a daunting guardian beast. Because of this use,... highly prized.
i have read a few books about myths and others normally you would be able to return one to its original state by or smaching the statue/bring back its "soul" from somewhere or my favorite allow them to make a potion out of the basilisks blood
Is it possible to cut off its head and use it to turn other beings into stone?
But how, how did you know?
love this big boi!!
