Aberrant Ground. The ground in a 10-foot radius around the mouther is doughlike difficult terrain. Each creature that starts its turn in that area must succeed on a DC 10 Strength saving throw or have its speed reduced to 0 until the start of its next turn.
Gibbering. The mouther babbles incoherently while it can see any creature and isn’t incapacitated. Each creature that starts its turn within 20 feet of the mouther and can hear the gibbering must succeed on a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the creature can’t take reactions until the start of its next turn and rolls a d8 to determine what it does during its turn. On a 1 to 4, the creature does nothing. On a 5 or 6, the creature takes no action or bonus action and uses all its movement to move in a randomly determined direction. On a 7 or 8, the creature makes a melee attack against a randomly determined creature within its reach or does nothing if it can’t make such an attack.
Multiattack. The gibbering mouther makes one bite attack and, if it can, uses its Blinding Spittle.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 17 (5d6) piercing damage. If the target is Medium or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 10 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is killed by this damage, it is absorbed into the mouther.
Blinding Spittle (Recharge 5–6). The mouther spits a chemical glob at a point it can see within 15 feet of it. The glob explodes in a blinding flash of light on impact. Each creature within 5 feet of the flash must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or be blinded until the end of the mouther’s next turn.
"The Colour out of Space."
Does the stone turn back to normal if the Gibbering Mouther moves or dies?
The DM made us fight this thing in an abandoned library and for the first 2-3 rounds, I could not do literally anything. It stuck me in its's Aberrant Ground and then blinded me with its Blinding Spittle. Basically, put me out of the fight for a good few rounds. Eventually, I 3rd level Guiding Bolt it and incinerated it. Hands down, one of the coolest monsters to use but really annoying to be up against, especially if you fail all your saving throws 😭
"There ain't no second chance against the Thing with Forty Eyes, girl!"
That depends on whether the party identifies the noise as hostile. My party will hear a room full of panicked party guests who've barricaded themselves in a room freaking out and bickering (following an attack by a coven of night hags). If my party believes that is actually a room full of panic stricken party goers and not the two gibbering mouthers one of the hags let into the room to devour them, just waiting at the door, the enemy gets surprise.
The DM just needs to make the sound a benign one. Unless someone in the party is letting me know they're not buying it (no roll needed, just on your guard) they walk right into it. That's how this thing hunts.
I just used one of these for the first time last night. No character took damage but for three tense rounds I managed to scare the living hell out of my players! They don't ever want to fight one again; awesome monster!
I threw two of these at my players and now they hate caves for some strange reason.
I'm doing a circus themed dungeon. Complete with Clowns, Mimes, and Rakdos Performers. This thing is going to be the muddled remains of a barbershop quartet that used to perform at the circus until there was a terrible fire which melted them together. Instead of murmuring incoherently they will sing in harmony.
A Gibbering Mouther is always cool B)
Haven't seen this before! Nope!
I actually created a buffed version of this monstrosity for my player's displeasure. Its essentially the same thing except made of nerds and with joint glasses over all of its eyes feel free to check it out, its called a twaddling mouther. (twaddling is a synonym for gibbering.)
Nah, the gibbering mouther is alright, but have you seen the goon balloon?
What have you done.
WHAT HAVE YOU DOOOOOOOONE
In my campaign the PCs had just killed an allosaurus and left the corpse there, later in the dungeon there is a gibbering mouther i was thinking i could have the mouther absorb the dino and be an epic boss.
If i did end up doing this would the stats be higher or lower then an allosaurus. because i would give it all the mouther abilities and some of the dinos so would it be to strong if a gave it normal allosaur hp.
Looks like fecto forgo from kirby and the forgotten land. Many eyes, many mouths, both consume everything, and are equally terrifying
