Fire Absorption. Whenever the golem is subjected to fire damage, it takes no damage and instead regains a number of hit points equal to the fire damage dealt.
Immutable Form. The golem is immune to any spell or effect that would alter its form.
Magic Resistance. The golem has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Magic Weapons. The golem's weapon attacks are magical.
Multiattack. The golem makes two melee attacks.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 7) bludgeoning damage.
Sword. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (3d10 + 7) slashing damage.
Poison Breath (Recharge 6). The golem exhales poisonous gas in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Right, in case it gets disarmed. And also in case for some bizarre reason I decide not to use its free item interaction to pick the sword back up as the first thing it does on its turn. So, not a great example. And your second scenario is the very scenario I've called into question -- why would I decide it attacks that way, i.e. the inefficient way? If I want to give my players a break, I can just fudge a roll. Or lower some bad guys' ACs and hit points. Or even have his sword get teleported to the astral plane, leaving only slam attacks. A disarm that actually matters, in other words. There are a million things I can do besides using an inefficient attack written into its stat block. But you've missed my question. I'm asking why this stat block is seemingly written in an illogical way. I ask this question genuinely because perhaps I've missed something, and I can learn a thing here. But I already learned a long time ago that I get to decide however my monsters attack.
so ironically ball barriers be more effective then
Come on man, relax.
You've just acted like I'm an idiot for suggesting disarms, then provided on your own examples of how to make disarming work, players with disarm abilities would learn that. And some groups don't fudge rolls and do things in the open. Why does it seem like your criticizing my response? I know you asked genuinely, and I gave a genuine answer. Does it honestly matter so much that it's written the way it is? It's not worth being rude over.
No, there isn't a good reason and there isn't a lesson to learn from it. It was just made that way and yes it's inconsistent and illogically formatted. The only tangible benefit is the ability to choose to deal more bludgeoning damage if slashing is resisted for some reason, which is almost as niche a case as disarming is.
I still think you should think more carefully about your phrasing and attitude. All DM fudge and the one's that don't are lousy DMs is a generalization that's more offensive and declarative than you need to be. Isn't it possible I might've gotten defensive because you're taking hard stances and saying things that convey the sense that you're looking down on people? Just because you don't mean anything by it doesn't mean you don't seem rude.
I never missed your question. You're asking someone to provide some insight on something that you've already pointed out is just pointless and unnecessary, I did my best to do that by listing some niche benefits. You picked apart every possible thing about my answer that could've been considered inadequate, but your question just didn't have any good answer to provide. There's little to no shop to talk here, and if you're not going to be satisfied by people's attempts at it you don't need to put that on me as if it's my fault for not living up to your expectations.
