Traits
Keen Hearing and Smell. The jackal has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.
Pack Tactics. The jackal has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the jackal's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.
Actions
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +1 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 (1d4 – 1) piercing damage.
Great if you need stats for a coyote.
Agreed, this makes a great stand-in for a (mundane) coyote!
A question on Stat Block form:
Pack Tactics always seems to use the exact same wording, specifying 5 foot radius... If that advantage were extended to 10 feet for a particular creature's stat block, should a different term like Tactical Teamwork be used, instead of "Pack Tactics"? Or can it just say "Pack Tactics. The creature has advantage ~(etc)~ within 10 feet ~(etc)", under the same old Pack Tactics heading & wording?
I'm not sure whether 5 ft vs 10 ft range distinction falls within the common variability of these ability listings, or it warrants a distinct title.
I could see giving Coyotes advantage to 10ft; or write up something about the howl.
I think this is the only Small canine in 5e, so if any character has a small breed pet dog--or a Tiny creature needs a canine mount--these are the stats to use, I think.
EPIC
It's within 5 feet of the target, not 5 feet of the jackal.
This makes a great swarming or hoard monster, especially at lower levels unless you want your party to fight like a thousand at 20th LV or similar levels
Is that a Jackal though... No it's Jack the Jackal, and he has a fedora (I'm hoping someone will get this joke)
