Keen Smell. The troll has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
Regeneration. The troll regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn. If the troll takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the troll's next turn. The troll dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.
Multiattack. The troll makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage.
Description
Fearsome green-skinned giants, trolls eat anything they can catch and devour. Only acid and fire can arrest the regenerative properties of a troll’s flesh.
You can make one as a DM
"Oh, lizzen now. If I tell you a story, that 'mazes... Will you, will you spot me drinks and meal for supper?" It was hard to take offense at such a ragamuffin whose size barely filled the pity that it's clothes blared.
"For the love of Sune, it's needs a belly before it could hold a bite." Lauren tut-tutted. That was all I needed to hear, by Lliira there should be more joy bringers. Grinning I hoisted the wee one up to a table saying "Give this a shot". I must be going soft but after a mead and some stew the tale I heard that did amaze and confound.
It seems that a Drunken Master had established, deep in the trailways of the wastehills, an monastic order. Based on a mix of Freya and Lliira tenets. This sect had been lost to the known joy bringers when Lliira became an exarch to Sune. In the passing of time and focused attention became it's own walled homlet of joy. They believed that the joy they shared during their life must be consumed or it would dissipate into the earth. The bodies of their peaceful followers were taken to the edge of large cave a few days away and left there.
The cave system was home to a slumbering beast who well, is really not important except to say that small animals would not approach this area. However, Trolls, with joie de vie, good sense of smell and rapacious hunger soon found it. Eventually it was a part of the regular milk run for a tribe. Trolls exist an extremely long time - until stopped and of course have that regenerative quality. The part I didn't know and learned is that they change over time depending on their diet. These trolls were changing slowly whether this had to do with some magical blessing of Freya or the Joy of Lliira - it's not important. By Sune's fiery locks, don't look beyond her beauty. A few of the Trolls in the tribe started developing habits that the other Trolls found unbearable. Then, the many descended on the few and tore them apart. Burned them in a fire. One pregnant female escaped, made her way to the Abbey and was taken in by the monks. Apparently she and her brood remain their today and are as pleasant as any of the monks. They still serve the same purpose - as reapers of joy. That's a tale that's lit like a candle and for sure you can imagine what happens when the light goes out on that...
Nice
I am just ever so slightly disappointed that the pronunciation button didn't rick roll me.
depnds whether the regen is a conshus actoin or instictive. I mean humanns don't think about healing right.(i am not judging your apinion this is just how I would do it if I was dm)
I hate them trolls!!!!!!
Firstly, I would like to say that trolls are one of my favorite monsters (after the Lich and Beholder of course).
Secondly, do not ever, ever let your players have a troll as an ally. These things cannot be killed by 90% of the Monster Manual due to that regeneration; the only things that can really defeat the troll are spellcasters, fire elementals, fiends, dragons, and life-draining undead. If that sounds like a lot, keep in mind that a Goristro (a CR 17 creature) vs. Troll battle always ends with the Troll winning.
Xlorp (the troll in the Troglodyte Warren) lasted all the way through WDMM without dying ONCE, while the shield guardian died twice (and was Revivified both times; Space Orogs are not pushovers).
This guy looks like he's green and retired.
Not to be that guy but technically it is more in line with the Norse trolls and Tolkien’s trolls are just like that because he borrowed heavily from norse mythology.
What cr would this be if it had 120 up?
That was a feature of the stone/mountain troll subspecies in older editions. Fifth edition lacks that subspecies hence the safety during the day.
Yesterday, qe defeated one as a party of lvl 1 characters (with preparation)
It was also a buffed version with 4 arms, and 5 attacks per turn. Looking at it now, DM ran it with his default stats and hp.
Clerics are op guys.
Sigh...why not just state the height of the creatures in feet?
Really like the way you have this set up but if I were to make a change it would be to add the knowledge of Darkvision at the same DC as they hunt by smell.
I just feel like it's a similar cognitive leap to look at a Trolls large nose and presume it hunts by smell as it would be to notice a Trolls eyeshine and conclude that it has Darkvision.
Hey, why do players get death saves but not monsters?
troll'd
You are thinking of a different species of troll. In pathfinder, the CAVE TROLL specifically fears sunlight because it turns to stone. However in D&d there are many different species of troll ranging from
Troll classic: (above)
Scrag: (aquatic, smaller and stronger bites fresh and saltwater versions)
Mountain: (larger and usually bossing around other dumber giantkin like ogres)
Cave: (much larger and deadlier than classic)
Fell: (cross bred with fiends, resisting fire)
Ice: (see through skin, smarter and smaller than normal trolls and use weapons)
Snow: (large and hairy, same territory as ice troll)
Fire troll: (dont ask how, but resistant to fire)
Hello! Not sure if you're still around the forums but thank you so much for this! As a completely beginner-DM stuff like this really makes it easy to add a little extra spice to the game i'm running! So thank you for this! It worked out great!
Kind of like an ogre, but more nimble, slender, and.... slower moving? Interesting, I wonder if there's a design choice reason that ogres move 40 ft and trolls only 30.
I wonder if they wanted to make trolls slow enough to escape from since they can heal, which can lead to a TPK-risk in certain circumstances.
