Photosynthysis. If it has at least one hit point, is in sunlight, and is motionless (movement by the wearer does not count), the gadabout regains 1 hit point per hour. Additionally, it can replenish enough air for one creature, preventing suffication in enclosed places.
Unusual Nature. The gadabout doesn’t require food or sleep.
Multiattack. The gadabout makes two Branch attacks.
Branch. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 (1d4 + 1) slashing damage.
Wrap. The gadabout enters the space of a willing Medium or Small creature within 5 feet of itself and gently wraps its branches around the target. The target can remove the gadabout at any point, at which the gadabout uses its reaction to move into the nearest unoccupied space. The gadabout can extend its wings, at which point the target is grappled (escape DC 0). While grappled by the gadabout, the target determines where the gadabout moves on the gadabout’s turns and accompanies the gadabout wherever it goes. When attatched, the gadabout gains the benefit of full cover, reduced to 3/4 cover when its wings are extended.
Description
Gadabouts are gentle, winged creatures that can be used in place of normal wings. A gadabout wraps its branches around a Humanoid creature, spreads its butterfly wings, and allows its wearer to fly. The gadabout can also replenish enough air for one creature.
Gadabouts require sunlight and water to survive. A healthy specimen can live for 25 years. Although its preferred mode of travel is flight, a gadabout can creep slowly along the ground as well.
The method of growing Gadabouts are unkown, making them valuable commodities.

Posted Sep 30, 2026Thanks! I haven't seen this for years, so this was a blast from the past. Quick clarification (I assume you got it, but for also for future people), it receives that cover from the person it is attached to. It does not provide cover to the person. The idea is that since the person is wearing it, it gains cover from the wearer's armour and body, but I also didn't want to entirely remove the possibility of my player's sabatoging enemies by trying to target their breathing stuff. Full cover when withdrawn means that it can be hidden from view (to smuggle into a place, or to render untargettable to magic missile).
Letting my players play smart (and in turn playing NPCs intellegently with and against them) is my goal with the changes. Also, making it more planty (notice the self-replenishing capabilites, which are tied to sunlight, which, if the DM chooses, means it can't be in full cover to restore itself), because for a plant monster stat block, the original one could have just been a bubble into the elemental plane of air, or a floating algea colony, or a magical bat that farted oxygen. Actually, the magical bat wouldn't make sense given the immunities, but the other two would.
