Edit: If you want to give them a magic item, Boots of Striding and Springing work great, especially if you build the arena for it - they can jump between hard-to-reach places while pelting the players with arrows, but go down to a few good ranged attacks. Giving them Gloves of Missile Snaring and swapping their shortbow for a hand crossbow as well makes them a CR 1/2 in my opinion, as ranged attacks become rather ineffective and the skeleton might be able to use Vex as well.

I don't care if it's suboptimal, I want a skeleton buddy and Pact of the Chain is my new life now.

Also, the art is good. I love that shortbow dang, nobody's ever made a shortbow look cool before.

I nerfed the skeletons in one of my dungeons, took away their bows because one of my players is a Minecraft player. Otherwise, I love customizing their weapons. I mean, not every person gets buried with a shortsword and a shortbow? Unless it's a local custom...

As a Necromancer, would it make more sense to use Skeletons or Zombies? Aside from Undead Fortitude, Zombies seem kind of just worse than the skeletons, with less range, much lower AC, as well as being outsped and outranged by Skeletons, as well as worse saves aside from Con and more notably Strength.

So funny thing, in the legacy version, they did have a trait listed lower down on the details page and not the stat block:
Undead Nature. A skeleton doesn’t require air, food, drink, or sleep.

However, this version seems to lack it entirely. And creature types don't have their own broad rulings either. So unless more is added when purchasing the book, this page would suggest that Skeletons now need to eat, drink, sleep and breath. Despite lacking the ability to do any of these things XD;;

 It appears to be immune to exhaustion, the only drawback to not doing those things.

 Yes.  In fact, any monster can be considered proficient with any weapon that appears in its stat block.  In the case of skeletons, they are proficient with Shortbows and Shortswords.  If you give it another Shortsword, it'd be able to make use of the Light property and use its bonus action to make a second attack.  Unless it's a familiar, of course, then it can't attack with its bonus action, and the second sword would just be a backup weapon.

Fun fact: When a familiar disappears, it drops any equipment it's holding.  In the case of Skeletons conjured as familiars, they each have a Shortbow and a Shortsword, which is 35 gold worth of equipment.  Considering it only costs 10 gold worth of incense to cast Find Familiar, this makes conjuring Skeletons via Pact of the Chain's Find Familiar profitable at a rate of about 15,000 gold per hour, assuming you can buy enough incense for that and sell all the weapons produced.

Either way, spending just 10 gold for a Shortbow and a Shortsword is a good deal.

 RAW, you would be correct. Though

However, I think most DMs would hand wave the equipment to vanish as well, as it was a product of the familiar summoning, and not gifted gear that's intended to be dropped.

 RAW, you'd be correct, but the MM states that the DM has purview if the gear that's dropped by creatures is salvageable or not.

The DM could easily just hand wave that the gear was a part of the familiar's summoning, so when the familiar goes, so does the equipment.

This is a serious question. Who would win, a wrecking ball or a pile of animated bones?

According to the physical book, skeletons have an AC of 13, not 14. Get your stuff together, D&D Beyond.
