Posted Jul 18, 2019Even more so when you realize that the basic level (3rd) Conjure Animals can summon EIGHT of these. Along with Swarm of Ravens it gets simply ridiculous :D Ravens better in usual situation, and bats better when dealing with an invisible/hidden enemy (bats don't give a shit - blindsight, baby!).
EDIT: Although it should be noted that Conjure Animals technically doesn't allow you to pick specifically what animal you want - just the CR category, and the DM chooses. Most will go along the roleplay, I guess, so if your druid prays to mother nature for "winged allies to carry the party over that chasm", the DM will likely bless you with a set of nice, plump Giant Owls.

Posted Apr 14, 2020It’s not that OP.
But I don’t really know because I’m using these guys against a 7th level party as a warmup encounter.

Posted Sep 9, 2020Is there a limit to how many swarms can be in the same square?

Posted Sep 19, 2020The character builder for beast master ranger shows this as a companion option. That must be an oversight, but now I really want to make a gnome beast master who calls on a swarm of bats to lift him up into the air by little rings on his armor.

Posted Sep 19, 2020Thinking Swarm of bats is OP... lol. Zombie has same health, but better abilities, and doesn't decrease damage when taking damage. And cannot be defened.

Posted Jun 25, 2022I homebrew if someone is within the swarm they have disadvantage on perception checks and attacks. It makes sense if you've got 5+ bats screwing with you.

Posted Jan 17, 2023Technically I guess RAW any number of swarms can be in one 5ft square, but if you want a limit I guess maybe 4 swarms per square, just sorta treating them as tiny beasts. (normally 4 bats that aren't part of a swarm could occupy the same space)

Posted May 1, 2023I was thinking about making a rule that weapon attacks against a swarm have to have more than 1 hit to kill them all. If someone managed to do 44 points of damage in 1 melee attack, it doesn't really make sense that the whole swarm dies. AOE spells I am fine with.
Thoughts?

Posted Jun 12, 2023Roleplaying that out, I could see an "attack action" consisting of many quick swings or jabs. Otherwise, you might have to up the CR to accommodate the buff.

Posted Aug 3, 2024I have been in a game where multiple swarms attacked a party; once several were below half HP, some flew away but others merged to make full swarms again.
I also treat swarms as size large, there's no way 22 bats, tiny though they are, are going to fit in a single 5*5*5 cube/square while flying around. A 5ft Gelatinous Cube could eat that many though.
