Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Aug 8, 2020
Additions: You will now see (the dice set you have selected on My Dice) and can use the D20 Manual dice roller on; My Encounters, Edit Encounter, Encounter Summary and the Combat Tracker.
Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 17, 2020
Additions: As much as we love our fearless leader and our designer's cat Zummo, we have removed Happy Adam and Bob Ross Adam from the Combatant avatar fallback images and replaced them with something more generic and familiar.
Fixes: The old text color for initiatives on friendly and enemy combatants had the appearance of being inactive, so we improved initiative contrast and darkened some color so it is less confusing.
Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 10, 2020
Additions:Hit Point Widget added: We all know that most D&D Players don't particularly care for doing math while they tell their story, so we have implemented a HP adjustment widget to help you add and subtract Hit Points.
Now when you "click" on monster stat block links (tooltips) it will open in a new tab preventing your Combat from loosing all of it's progress.
We have been using the Combat Tracker in our home games for a few weeks, and although it is certainly not in a finished state yet, we experienced enough value that we have decided to go ahead and release it now - even in its unfinished state - to both 1) let subscribers gain some of that value and 2) get feedback as early as possible.
Please keep in mind that this is not a finished product, and we invite subscribers to help us make it the best it can be!
Who can use the Combat Tracker?
All D&D Beyond Subscribers. The Combat Tracker is in full active development right now. We will be allowing early access to NEW Combat Tracker features to our Subscribers first, to prove out concepts and new functionality. We took the same approach with the Alpha version of the Encounter Builder with much success. This delivery method allows us to digest feedback in bite sized chunks and perform testing to figure out the best user experience possible.
What is a Development Alpha?
The Development Alpha of the Combat Tracker allows us to test features and user experience.
-
Functional but expecting a lot of bugs
-
Should be no core functionality bugs
-
Core functionality could change with feedback
-
Functionality could appear or disappear at any time
We will be working on validating bug reports and cleaning up the Combat Tracker. Once these tasks have been completed we will release to Beta, essentially meaning the Combat Tracker tool is complete.

Excellent work on the progress so far! Love the work on the player/monster HP tracker! Adding in max hp.. and just adding/subtracting healing/damage makes it so much easier! Keep it coming.. you guys are doing great!
I love the hitpoint widget. That is going to help me a lot. I would love to have that short summary switch between characters when I clicked "next", so that I always have the character info I need for that turn. It could be overridden by clicking on the character in the list, but having it change along with would really speed things up. That and the eventual integration of the dice roller would make this so helpful. Thanks for all the work!
Fantastic tool! Biggest want is to be able to get the PC's stat blocks like we have the monsters including HP (total and current) in the tracker.
Additional features:
dynamically add monsters (some modules have additionally spawning monsters, plus summons),
dynamically add PCs,
add friendly non-pcs.
refactor initiative after encounter start.
Is there a way to add specific players from campaigns into the encounter?
Not while running, you need to adjust the encounter planner and re-start the encounter (as far as I can tell).
Awesome new improvements. I especially like that you fixed the issue with breaking encounters (navigating away) by clicking on spells in a monster's profile.
The new hp adjustment feature is awesome. I would like the ability to with a single click adjust max HP to equal to the max roll. For example a Wraith's HP is 67 (9d8 + 27). I would like there to be able to with a single click set the max HP to a Wraith to 99. It would be even better if this was simply a campaign setting so I can just say "in my campaign all monsters have MAX HP because that's how I balance things".
Can’t wait to try this our next week!
The buttons are really nice indeed, however if you want "set it to max on campaign level", there must be people who wants "set it to min on campaign level" and "set it to random on campaign level" (I'm definitely in the third one). I would like to see the "Roll HP based on HD calculation" more than "set it to max" which I can easily put in, meanwhile I would have to do several rolls and maths to do the random HP calculation per creature.
What is the purpose of grouping monsters together in the Encounter Builder, if when combat begins they each get their own initiative and are separated? I want to have the stats of an Orc on a Worg, so i'd like both there, but grouped together on one initiative as they move and fight. What else is grouping for? (Enjoying so far!)
I have the exact same problem, I don't want the three Frost Giants to all go on one initiative, my players will be dead in seconds. But if I add them independently, I don't know which one was the one (for example) they were trying to persuade to let them inside. Having A,B,C on non-grouped multiples is so useful, or being able to edit the monsters names.
If the monsters in a group are not separated, it would be way more complicated to track their individual hit points. They don't get their own initiative, they just get their own entry, on the same initiative count.
If you want your Orc and Worg on the same initiative, you can just manually adjust one's initiative count to match the other's before starting the encounter.
I share this sentiment and add a BIG thank-you for adding the damage/health calculators!
After yesterday's session. I have a suggestion,
1. would be great to put the (a new small?) "next" button at the bottom of the currently selected initiates rectangle, this way you don't have to scroll down the initiative list to move to the next combatant. It would be right there where you are already selected.
2. also, ties in initiative still seem to cause some confusion in keeping them sorted unless you use what ever order the tracker is using (doesn't seem to be based off of dex bonus). Maybe we need a "weight" (1-10) or sub-order field to help resolve this
I sort ties before starting the combat. Ties with monsters I give the PC a +1 and let them go first, ties among PCs I check Dex bonuses and give +1 init to the higher killing the tie.. if both have the same dex bonus I have them roll a d6, winner gets the +1.
Just trying out the new hp widget but it appears that Character hit points are not populating on start of encounter. If they start at 0/0 then the hp widget only works for monsters. Previously, I thought there was a way to force character hit points in manually but, can't seem to do that now.
It would still be great if there was an auto-roll button for all PC's at the top and little buttons beside PC's individual initiative to auto-roll for a single character. The rationale is the situation where either the party is okay auto-rolling to speed things or, a single person has walked away from the table to take a bio-break and the DM needs to quickly pop in initiatives for them or for friendly NPC's
1. This is a really good idea.
2. RAW (from the PHB):
I would love to see the "next" button float at the bottom of the screen no matter where I am on the page.
Also, it would be great to have a drag handle to reset the order mid-combat or rearrange ties etc.
You may want to brush up on RAW, bolded for emphases:
If you would start combat with a controlled mount, then you roll initiative, then change it to the rider.
Pulling data from the character's sheet isn't implemented just yet. It is in the pipeline.
If you go to 'Manage Characters' then in the SELECT PRESET drop down, you can choose what campaign to pull from. Then you go have to click on the three dots and hide characters you did not want in the encounter. It seem like you can only select characters from one campaign and the last I checked (before the Mar 10, 2020 update), the character selection would only show a max of 20 characters, if you had more, some wouldn't show.
I would like to see the character cards to have check boxes so you can choose who you want in, as opposed to having to choose who I don't want in it.
