Gather your party and prepare for an unforgettable journey! Heroes of the Borderlands is your magical portal into the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Perfect for seasoned adventurers and newcomers alike, this is D&D's largest starter set ever and combines the magic of tabletop storytelling with the ease of a board game!
A Complete Adventure Experience

Heroes of the Borderlands is the biggest, boldest, and most beginner-friendly Dungeons & Dragons starter set ever! Everything in the box is purpose-made to help you get rolling in minutes and learn as you go.
What's in the box is still, without a doubt, Dungeons & Dragons, but it's approached from a fresh angle—one that is especially helpful when you're learning to DM or onboarding new players.
Inside, you'll find a trove of physical components to help introduce players to the game and immerse them in their sessions:
![]() A Quick Start Guide, Play Guide, and 3 Adventure BookletsStep into a world alive with danger, mystery, and magic. This set of booklets provides ready-to-run adventures and quick-start rules for Dungeon Masters to take their players on magnificent quests:
The adventures in these booklets also offer up to 60 hours of replayable content! Maybe your party charged in spells blazing the first time. On your next run, you might talk your way out—or sneak past the danger entirely. |
![]() 4 Iconic D&D ClassesChoose your playstyle with four core classes designed to showcase different types of heroes:
Each class's board teaches essential game mechanics using tactical elements, such as Hit Points and spell slot tokens, or equipment and spell cards. It also empowers players to make meaningful choices as their character grows and discovers new gear. |
![]() Over 200 Game CardsSpeed up play and enhance immersion with over 200 quick-reference cards:
These cards keep the game flowing smoothly. Players won't have to flip through books to find what spells they have or what attacks their character can make; they're sitting in front of them on their character boards! These cards also help you create modular characters by swapping out equipment and spells to customize your hero. |
![]() 18 Full-Color Maps and Other HandoutsImmerse your group in vivid locations with 18 fold-out maps covering dungeons, strongholds, and wilderness:
|
![]() 200+ Punch-Out TokensBring your world to life with more than 200 colorful tokens:
No more having to ask, "Wait, how many of these goblins are there?" Or "How much gold do I have again?" These high-quality tokens help anchor imagination in the moment-to-moment action of combat or through the twisting paths of overland travel. |
![]() 11 Polyhedral DiceThis complete set includes 1xd4, 4xd6, 1xd8, 1xd10, 1xd12, 2xd20, and 1 percentile die. In D&D, every roll tells a story. From nail-biting attacks to desperate saving throws, these dice help bring chance to every outcome. |
Start Something Legendary

Heroes of the Borderlands was made for friends, families, and game night heroes, with each session designed to run in a couple of hours. Thanks to the easy setup components, you can just crack open the box and start playing!
Play as one of four iconic classes—Cleric, Rogue, Wizard, or Fighter—and immerse yourself in a campaign that feels vast, alive, and tailor-made for heroes in the making. And with fast, streamlined character creation, you can choose a different class next time and see how the story changes. The adventure's structure and variety make it easy to replay from multiple angles, whether you're the DM or a player itching to try something new.
Best of all, this is D&D designed for everyone. The rules are welcoming, the setup is fast, and it can be learned as you play. Perfect for curious newcomers who've never rolled a d20 before and grizzled adventurers who are embarking on a new quest.
Play In-Person or Online with the Digital Adventure Pack
The Heroes of the Borderlands Ultimate Bundle includes not just the physical board game but also a digital experience integrated into D&D Beyond. This online toolkit equips you with premade characters and 19 quickplay maps, complete with tokens, fog of war, and stickers.
What's better, when Heroes of the Borderlands releases on September 16, D&D Beyond's Maps virtual tabletop (VTT) will be free for all registered D&D Beyond users to run their games! No need to spend hours prepping. Just open the map, drop your players in, and start rolling.
Answer the Call for Adventure

Wow, that's actually a lot of stuff.
"What's in the box is still, without a doubt, Dungeons & Dragons, but it's approached from a fresh angle"... or to put it another way, a 4e box set...
[sighs] 4e. Happy, happy days (are here again)!
Can I use some Forgotten Realms November 2025 time-travel DLC to leap to September, please.
D&D 5.4th edition goes from strength to strength!
What’s the level progression over the 40-60 hrs? The character sheet says level 1 and potentially has a back that says level 2? It has a CR4 Red Dragon Wyrmling so it feels like there should be progression beyond 2nd level?
This actually looks great for new players and I might buy it, considering how much is included in it. The cards and tokens also ensure it's better for new players, as it looks more like a board game. I think this is generally a great idea. Looking forward to trying it out.
The Essentials Kit was a 5e box set. And Box Sets date back to Basic with the Red Box, not really a 4E invention.
I really wish this were the standard dice setup when you say "Buy a set of dice", instead of getting 7 dice, one of each type, and having to merge sets to get Advantage etc (or re-roll). Good choice on this one.
Does this set have any Side Kick Rules, like the Essentials Kit did? That was quite inspired, as a way to help smaller groups get started, but I don't see any mention of it there.
Wow man, totally jealous! In my red box set all I got was 6 light-blue dice, a crayon(!), two black and white booklets (a 64-page Players Manual and a 48 page Dungeon Masters Rulebook) and a sheet of paper telling me about the RPGA (lol). We could also mentioned things like the Dragonlance: Time of the Dragons box set (with it's glorious collection of A4 info-cards), the Ruins of Undermountain box set (I think that was the title(?)), The 1983(?) Greyhawk Setting boxset with that HUGE poster map of the world. All amazing products throughout the years.
For clarity, The Essentials Kit reminded me (rightly or wrongly) of a 4e box set. I really enjoyed played 4e and I think the further we move away from it, the more people are seeing some "good" in it. So, when I compare this upcoming Starter Kit to the quality/standards of a 4e box set I mean it as a positive, because I feel like they got a lot right during that time.
As you mentioned The Essentials Kit, rather than say, the 'smaller' content of Dragons of Stormwreck Isle Box Set, I'd like to think we're kind of saying the same thing from slightly different angles.
I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my post, and agree that clarifying the Side Kick Rules for 2024 would be an easy win. The feedback people are giving online from the recent GenCon event suggests that player's voices/input is having a bit of a resurgence (for lack of a better word), which will hopefully lead to better and better products for years to come.

I love the new target of completely new-to-the-game players, but can we have like maybe an Expansion pack for more experienced players? I feel like that would sell.
Will you get Keep on the Borderlands Digital Dice Set with the Digital set only? I buy physical products at my local gamestore. I definitely want to buy a digital version of Borderlands on Beyond but I don't want to lose the opportunity to have a digital dice set in the process.
Somehow it feels like cheaper(but comparing the price, it is good kind of cheap) version of Divinity Orginal Sin board game, I guess cooperation between Larians and Wizards rubbed on both sides :) That is great. My first try to approach DnD as brand new DM with brand new party of friends was back in 2014 with Lost Mines starter set and it was not great... Divinity, on other hand, was a great tabletop rpg experience, so I am going to give it another try and try to lure my friends in a world of DnD again with this starter set
What would it contain?
I too, want to know the intended level break outs. I hope these hours aren't replaying the same adventures to get a different experience based on choices,.
I’m in exactly the same boat. I’ve already preordered from my local game store, and would love if they could also sell me the Beyond content via a download code but they can’t. If I'm forced to buy digital from Beyond (and get no bundled discount because I supported my local game store), the least they can do is throw in the digital dice set.
When will it be in Japanese version?
