I’m Zac, and I’m thrilled to introduce myself as the new Principal Product Manager for D&D Beyond’s Maps team, and to chat a bit about the exciting road ahead.

Get Involved With the Future of the Maps VTT

In the spirit of TL;DR, I'll put the most important thing first: If you’re interested in shaping the future of D&D Beyond’s Maps VTT, I want to talk to you!
We're still developing exactly how these user feedback programs work, but for now, please fill out this survey to indicate your interest and tell us a bit about yourself. Over the next few months, I'll follow up with select participants via email to schedule phone or video interviews, conduct surveys, test clickable prototypes, and provide feedback on early design sketches.
(Full disclosure: several of our upcoming projects for the Maps VTT are DM focused, so for the next few months outreach will be pretty focused on DM feedback. That also means if you are a DM—please sign up!)
Why We Want Your Feedback
Involving you in the development process is very much in line with how I’ve spent my entire career. I’ve spent the last 15 years building software products in all sorts of places, from startups to Fortune 500 companies and even the federal government. The throughline for my whole career has been to help teams build the RIGHT thing really well. And the best way to do that is to talk to the people who will be using it early and often!
Expanding the Feedback Loop
As Brian's post mentioned, we haven't been the chattiest bunch lately. As a part of the shift in how we communicate with all of you, I'll be popping up as WOTC_Zac in the subreddits, Discords, and forums.
I'll be watching for your ideas and asking for your feedback on our Maps VTT. We also want to be more transparent and share what we’re working on now, what we're working on next, and get your thoughts as we go.
Preparing for Upcoming Maps VTT Releases

This summer and fall, the Maps team has been investing in under-the-hood upgrades to support the cool stuff we'll be releasing over the coming months (more details in Brian Perry’s blog post).
But as we look ahead to new functionality, we know the best way to build software is to release early and often, and we'll be moving in that direction. You can expect more frequent updates as we kick off 2026. We’re still figuring out the exact rhythm, but the goal is to keep you in the loop and iterate quickly based on what you tell us.
Stay Tuned for More!
I've been playing D&D for 20 years, and it's a great honor and responsibility to be in this position. My job is to support you—the community, the players, the DMs. To make it easier to play D&D. To make it easier to get new people into D&D.
My job is all about making sure we’re building the best tools for you, and the best way to do that is to have a close, transparent relationship where you have a strong hand in shaping how these new features work.
Looking forward to chatting with you all soon!

Posted Mar 31, 2026Would love a way to add pins that could display location notes. It’s cumbersome to go back and forth between a dungeon map and the adventure book or other world notes.

Posted Apr 5, 2026I believe that dynamic lighting is a major undertaking that will take a considerable amount of time. For dynamic lighting to function properly, we need the ability to draw walls, place doors and windows, light sources must be made available and all have the correct range, darkvision must be transferred to maps, and if these things are only released step by step, there will be a lot of complaints again. Looking at the speed and size of updates being released for Maps, it could still be a long time.

Posted Apr 5, 2026I am aware. However, a lot of other mainstream vtt have the same feature already, even if new (Owlbear).

Posted Apr 6, 2026I guess, I am on the group that don't want dynamic lighting.
I like it how simple it is. If you want dynamic lighting use the other mainstream vtt's.

Posted Apr 7, 2026having the option is at least nice. You wouldn't need to use it.

Posted Apr 7, 2026Agreed, the option would be nice, but there are a lot more features I'd rather have first than them spend the time with Lighting.

Posted Apr 7, 2026I would much rather have a campaign planner and more useful maps folder that I can organize myself than all of the work that would go into dynamic lighting.
Dynamic lighting would essentially require being able to draw up the entire map in Maps VTT, and I fail to see the point of all of this if I still lack a way to meaningfully organize maps. Maybe this is because I want to have older maps on hand while prepping major locations and also have several different potential encounters to have, and the current maps system is just untenable for that.

Posted Apr 8, 2026@flynnbuservakt I definitely can agree there. Campaign planner is MUCH more important. I'd still want it on a roadmap though.

Posted Apr 8, 2026Dynamic lighting helps with immersion. Beyond has the funds. It if it’s added & you don’t like it. At least you have the option of not using it. Some people just prefer putting time behind the sessions.

Posted Apr 9, 2026I would honestly LOVE to see the below:
Those are my top 3 wishlists for 2026. The character sheets on maps is a massive win so far this year, if I get Condition Rings and Resizing of Tokens, I'll be incredibly happy and consider my subscription money well spent.

Posted Apr 17, 2026We need token vision, this feature would greatly improve maps making it easier for DMS to have dark dungeons and allowing players to understand how far they can see with dark visions or no dark vision also makes finehons infinitely more better as players lose track of where they have been and a DM doesn't have to keep erasing and replying fog of war which takes time and effort away from game play.

Posted Apr 17, 2026Thank you for replying with this reply.
I've seen a lot of people on here requesting dynamic lighting, and I'm one against it.
Having DM'd in other VTTs with Dynamic Lighting and although it is very immersive to the players, it is very HARD to setup.
I love Maps VTT for the fact that it is a "Honda Accord, not F16".
Please keep this philosophy.

Posted Apr 17, 2026Just have it as optional feature if it sounds as complex as F16-

Posted Apr 17, 2026of course it'd be optional. Everything is "optional".
Spend resources in other areas.

Posted Apr 18, 2026Limited development resources.
Option A) Build a complex element that a fraction of the playerbase would use.
Option B) Build two straightforward elements that most players and DMs would appreciate.
If you want an example of option B, making a standalone Encounter Tracker/Builder outside the VTT sidebar, that can import to and export from the VTT itself. You can't build everything at once, and there are things that everyone will use that haven't been implemented yet. Once that's all done, sure, go for the optional "sometimes someone will use it" ideas.

Posted Apr 18, 2026Saying that only a fraction of players will use this feature is questionable in my opinion.
After all, it's one of the most requested features.
Yes, only the DMs use it, but I can tell you from my own experience that all my players are waiting for this feature.

Posted Apr 18, 2026There's a reason why people keep saying
Because it is something that people don't use in many platforms that do provide it. Everyone "wants" it, but it's more of a "that's cool in principle" but the setup and work tends to become not worth the effort.
When all the key features that make a VTT worthwhile to everyone are complete, they can work on the things that only a fraction of the people want.
