Homebrew Balefire Vampire Species Details
Where many vampires are turned or created by curses or other black magics, there is a rare occasion where a vampire is born naturally from a full-fledged vampire. These natural births—sometimes called balefire vampires by those with a flair for the dramatic—lack many of the customary weaknesses of their kind, but also lose some of the undead powers their forebears lean into. But never should a balefire vampire be underestimated, for their powers and skills make them forces to be reckoned with.
Balefire Vampire Traits
As a balefire vampire, you start with the following traits:Creature Type
You are a Humanoid.
Ability Score Increase
Your heritage allows you greater grasp of your capabilities. You may increase one of your ability scores by 2, and two other ability scores by 1.
Size
You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you choose this race.
Speed
Your walking speed is 35 feet.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness as shades of gray.
Deathless Nature
You are partially undead thanks to your vampiric parent, and as such, you have a series of benefits from that lineage.
- You do not need to breathe.
- You are able to eat and need to do so, but you cannot gain more than one level of exhaustion from starvation.
- You gain resistance to poison damage.
Spider Climb
You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed. In addition, at 3rd level, you can move up, down, and across vertical surfaces and upside down along ceilings, while leaving your hands free.
Vampiric Bite
Your fanged bite is a natural weapon, which counts as a simple melee weapon with which you are proficient. You add your Constitution modifier, instead of your Strength modifier, to the attack and damage rolls when you attack with this bite. It deals 1d4 piercing damage on a hit. While you are missing half or more of your hit points, you have advantage on attack rolls you make with this bite.
When you attack with this bite and hit a creature that isn’t a Construct or an Undead, you can empower yourself in one of the following ways of your choice:
- You regain hit points equal to the piercing damage dealt by the bite.
- You gain a bonus to the next ability check or attack roll you make; the bonus equals the piercing damage dealt by the bite.
Regardless of how you empower yourself with this bite attack, you consume a portion of the creature's blood, and thus are considered to have eaten for the purposes of determining starvation. You can empower yourself with this bite a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Child of the Night
Due to your vampiric blood, you gain the ability to cast certain spells as your undead forebears themselves can do so innately. You gain the ability to cast charm person when you take this race. At 3rd level you become able to cast misty step, and at 5th level you are able to cast polymorph. When casting polymorph using this trait, you may only target yourself, and you must choose from the following forms: bat, cat, rat, raven, spider, or wolf. However, when polymorphed using this trait, your statistics remain unchanged, with the exception of your size and speed.
You may cast each of these spells a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses after a long rest. You use your Charisma modifier as your spellcasting modifier for these spells, where applicable.
Augmented Resistance
Your vampiric bloodline makes you far more capable of resisting magical and environmental effects. After you make a saving throw, you may choose to roll a second time and use the highest of your two rolls. Once you've used this ability, you cannot use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
