Guided by a flash of magical insight, you make one attack with the weapon used in the spell’s casting. The attack uses your spellcasting ability for the attack and damage rolls instead of using Strength or Dexterity. If the attack deals damage, it can be Radiant damage or the weapon’s normal damage type (your choice).
Cantrip Upgrade. Whether you deal Radiant damage or the weapon’s normal damage type, the attack deals extra Radiant damage when you reach levels 5 (1d6), 11 (2d6), and 17 (3d6).

Posted Aug 10, 2026Per the general rules on spellcasting, the hand you use for the somatic components can be the same hand you're using for the material component (which is the weapon in this case).

Posted Aug 10, 2026As has been pointed out multiple times in this thread, that "Attack/Save" thing is an artifact of D&D Beyond's compendium metadata and isn't part of the actual rules. It is not listed in the physical book or the digital version of the book on D&D Beyond. The fact that it says "melee" is an error.
The actual spell description from the book is what determines how the spell works according to the rules. The spell description does not limit the types of weapons that can be used other than requiring you to be proficient with the weapon. Any melee or ranged weapon you're proficient with can be used.

Posted Aug 22, 2026Hi there, in the Attack/Save part it says Melee, but the spell description only mentions weapon attack. I understand that RAW, it is not a Melee spell. It needs correction or clarification. In the PHB it doesn't specify anything, and it leads to interpret that this can be used with a ranged weapon indeed.

Posted Aug 24, 2026Yes.
It needs to be a weapon you're proficient with, and the weapon needs to be worth at least 1 cp. These are the only limitations on what weapons it can be used with.
The fact that it says "Melee" in the "Attack/Save" field at the top is due to a limitation of the way D&D Beyond categorizes spells. It doesn't appear in the actual text of the spell in the Player's Handbook and isn't actually part of the rules.

Posted Aug 24, 2026That is the correct interpretation. This can be used with any weapon, melee or ranged, as long as you're proficient with it and it's worth at least 1 cp. There's no ambiguity in the actual description of the spell.
The spell listing on D&D Beyond includes various metadata fields that are not part of the actual rules, like "Attack/Save" and "Damage/Effect". These are frequently full of errors made by D&D Beyond and do not have any impact on the actual rules. In this particular case it appears to be a limitation of the current system they're using, where it is necessary for them to put something in that field, and they've chosen to put "Melee" there even though it's wrong. This is a very questionable decision on their part, but it's one that so far they seem committed to.

Posted Sep 3, 2026Why did you word this so poorly? You are casting a cantrip (thus, the magic action), and it is unclear if this is a spell attack using a weapon (as implied) or a weapon attack using your spellcasting ability modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity. Why use over 30 words when you could have simply had "Make a weapon attack using your spellcasting ability modifier instead of strength or dexterity" instead?

Posted Oct 5, 2026You can absolutely use this spell with a longbow if you're proficient with it.
As has been pointed out several times in this thread, the "attack/save" thing is part of D&D Beyond's metadata and is not part of the actual rules. If you look at the actual description of the spell in the Player's Handbook, that does not appear anywhere.
The only restrictions on weapons you can use with this spell are that it has to be worth at least 1 cp and you have to be proficient with it. Any melee or ranged weapon that meets those criteria can be used.
