Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see.
Does this spell make some sort of sound or effect at the place you teleport to? From the description it seems the mist is only at the place you teleport from. I guess what im wondering is if I can misty step behind my opponent and act like they wouldn't know im there. Can i take the hide action afterwards? Can i do surprise attacks?
lol
I love this idea but do you think a arrow would go slow?
Can this be used in reaction to taking a hit in combat and arrive damage?
RAW, you can only use spells as a reaction that are explicitly labelled as taking "1 Reaction" to cast. The only possible exceptions I can think of is doing an Opportunity Attack with the War Caster feat or if the player specifically readied casting Misty Step on their turn. But even that that would not be RAW, as both the rules for War Caster and for Ready state that the spells need to have the casting time of "1 Action", while Misty Step takes a Bonus Action. And according to Jeremy Crawford, Bonus Action and Actions aren't interchangeable. So, only if DM allows it.
So, a caster who has Misty Step can't just react with a spontaneous Misty Step when they are hit by an attack or spell, unless DM wants them to.
Misty Step does not specify you need to teleport to a space on the ground. Remember, a "space" is not a "square"; you need only see an empty 5' cube of space to teleport there. They may not be able to teleport directly to the edge, but they can easily teleport to a safe spot above it, within the 30' of range (even less than 5' above, to avoid taking additional fall damage).
All magic spells are assumed to have perceptible effects when cast, unless otherwise specified (or modified by abilities). Misty Step does specify a particular, visible effect - "in silvery mist" - which wouldn't surprise alerted enemies, but could be used to surprise or sneak past unaware foes.
There are two things to keep in mind here: First, you must teleport to a place you can see. If you can see the space, then any sighted enemies around where you were should also be able to see it. You can, however, (Bonus Action) Misty Step to a secluded spot, Move out of Line of Sight, then Hide as your Action. (Preparing for a surprise attack next turn.)
Second, Misty Step has a Verbal component. Even if you are already hidden, the sound you make casting it may reveal you to an enemy you wish to ambush. (Stealth vs Perception checks.) If you are particularly Stealthy, or use the Subtle Spell Metamagic (eg. via Metamagic Adept), you absolutely could use this to surprise an unaware enemy. (You will, however, alert any other enemies within Line of Sight to your presence.)
If the place you're teleporting to is within 30 feet of your original location, sure. "you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see." has three stipulations: The first is that the location you're teleporting to is no more than 30 feet from your current location, the second is that you can see that location, and the third is that there is nothing else in that 5ftx5ft cube of space. Example: you could have your arcane eye go through a window in a building while you're outside and then misty step into that room (provided the location you're misty stepping to is within 30 feet of where you're currently standing). You can not, however, keep your arcane eye in the safety of the room at the inn you're renting 3 miles away and use misty step as a free, 100% accurate, 7th level teleport spell if sh** hits the fan.
Bladesingers best friend for battlefield antics!
Gonna have to add another stipulation to that ruling, RAW. Sight lines in 5e are not based on whether you can visually perceive the target, as is mentioned in the PHB, p. 201: "Targets".
So although a window or a wall of force is transparent, it is still treated at total cover, and nothing behind them can be targeted without a clear path to them.
Most replies I've seen on this say categorically no, but if I am the GM I would allow someone who either be incapacitated or willing and is picked up off the ground and thus carried like a backpack to be carried thru the Misty Step. A grappled enemy who was struggling to be free would not be incapacitated or willing, thus they could not be carried thru the Misty Step. Of course, the player has to be able to carry the other person without being over encumbered. That is how I'd run it.
Can a ranger class use this if you learn it from a scroll?
Basically brand new player. Ranger class wood elf level 4. I have 3 known spells: animal friendship, hunters mark and speak with animals (all currently level 1 i believe). We're currently in the Phaladen story and found the Misty Step scroll in the cultists house. Can I learn this or do I try and copy it, whether or not it gets destroyed? Tbh I'm still confused about spell slots and leveling, let alone getting a spell on a scroll. Any help would be appreciated!
Only wizards can transcribe scrolls into their spellbook; no other class can learn a spell from a scroll in this way.
A Ranger cannot cast this spell at all using a scroll, as to cast the spell in a spell scroll it must be available on your spell list, i.e- you cannot cast spells that you cannot choose as normal spells in the first place. The advantage of scrolls is that they let you have access to more spells than you can normally prepare, and they don't cost spell slots to cast them (though the scroll is destroyed instead).
Your DM is free to let you use it anyway if they wish (I don't see why not), but within the rules it'd still only be a single use of the scroll.
The easiest way for a Ranger to get this spell permanently is to take the Fey Touched feat from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, as not only can you cast it once for free, you can also use your own spell slots to cast it additional times. If your DM allows feats then you can choose one whenever you would normally get an ability score increase; so instead of adding two points to ability score(s), you pick the feat instead (which still lets you add 1 point to a score), gain misty step and your choice of one other spell. If you take this at 4th-level on a Ranger then you'll actually get getting misty step before you can normally cast a 2nd-level spell (so you can cast it once for free, then at 5th-level you can start casting it with spell slots as well).
Dimension door explicitly says that you can bring things up to your encumbrance and one willing creature within 5 ft of you.
Being a fourth level spell, you should assume that those capabilities are not present with this 2nd level spell (at least not the one willing creature part)
The range of self implies everything that you are carrying comes along for the ride.
If a spell doesn't say that it does a thing, then it doesn't do a thing.
Question from one of my friends, "if I stab my sword into someone's shoulder and misty step behind them will my blade come with me?"
If my familiar is just upstairs from me (on another floor of the same building), and within 30 feet of me, could I misty step to a spot in the room with it that I can see through it's eyes?
This has a casting time of bonus action, NOT reaction. If the fireball is coming at you, it's already too late
So... Nightcrawler :)
..........Sure? idk :)
