Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

For some adventurers, being the toughest gunman in town is key. These barbarians learned a different way to shrug off damage, and use it to great effect in avoiding and absorbing ranged attacks.

This subclass is a Quixotic-Dragon production.

In order to help us improve it, please take a moment to rate it and comment your answers to the following questions:

  • Is this subclass unique enough to be justified as its own thing?
  • Is there anything about this subclass that doesn't fit the balance established by Wizards of the Coast?
    • If so, what?
  • Is there any terminology or phrasing that made this subclass confusing or difficult to understand?
  • Are there any changes you would make in order to make the subclass more fun or easier to play?
  • Are there any other notes or improvements you would make to this class that were not mentioned in these questions?

Thank you for taking part in our creative process! We hope to have a refined version available soon!

Bite the Bullet

At third level, you have learned to shrug off ranged damage entirely. This ability applies while raging, but replaces your raging benefits with the following features.

  • You have advantage on Perception checks and Dexterity saving throws.
  • When you make a ranged weapon attack using Dexterity, you gain a bonus to the damage roll that increases as you gain levels as a barbarian, as shown in the Rage Damage column of the Barbarian table.
  • When you take bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage from ranged sources, you roll 1d20+ half your proficiency bonus, rounded down. On an 11 or higher, you take no damage, but on an 10 or lower you take damage as normal. On an 11 or higher, you may also add the ammunition to your own inventory (Even if you don't track normal ammunition, you want to track this), and know what type of weapon your enemy is using. You gain the ability to mitigate damage done by magical ammunition once you reach 6th level.

Return the Favor

Starting at 3rd level, bullets stored by Bite the Bullet have advantage to hit and to +1 damage on a hit.

Iron Supplement

Starting at 6th level, you can eat bullets stored by Bite the Bullet to gain temporary HP equal to 1d6 + your Constitution modifier. If you consume magical ammunition in this way, the die size increases by once for every +1 on the ammunition. For example, +1 ammunition grants 1d8, +2 grants 1d10, etc.

You also gain a bite attack, as your teeth are as tough as steel. When you hit with such an attack, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier.

Duck and Cover

Starting at 10th level, you can attempt a Hide check during combat without disadvantage. You can also leap into cover within 15 feet of you without expending movement.

Sharp-Eyed

Starting at 14th level, you can use the third feature granted by Bite the Bullet outside of raging once per short or long rest.

Magic Gullet

Starting at 14th level, you gain the ability to use Bite the Bullet on single-target, ranged spells as well as ammunition, though you cannot store the spells.
