It would be great if I could, as DM, create a character and transfer the ownership of it to a player. Or at least make it editable by them. The process of creating a character can be a bit labor-intensive for some people who would still really like to use the service.
If you create a campaign and send them the link they can create the character under that. Once they have minimum info populated it becomes available for you to edit.
I appreciate the suggestion, but it skips over my main point. I know several people are who pretty into D&D, but getting as far as "minimum info populated" is more than many people are interested in. Creating a Twitch account, D&D Beyond account. and then navigating back to the link has stopped multiple people I know from getting that far. They get confused, assume they're doing something wrong, and lose all interest. Not in D&D, mind you. They keep playing. But they can't get interested in the service enough to make a placeholder character.
Wouldn't you be putting in the effort to help your players with getting setup?
Yes, and I think that's dantelfer's point. Many casual players aren't willing to put effort into making a character, but are willing to play one (and, sometimes, tweak one). This is reasonable because it takes experienced players much less time to make an adequate character than it takes an inexperienced player.
Pitching a game to a group saying that the characters are ready to go is a very different deal in a group of friends that includes casual players. I think this is potentially a very important feature, and I was just talking to a fellow DM about such a feature's utility.

Changing owners of characters is a planned feature. It will have to have some restrictions to ensure content sharing exploits are minimized, such as you can freely transfer within a campaign, etc.
This will also make things easier when we build out the Quick Build feature fully. Right now, Randomize creates a truly random character with no accounting for optimization. Quick Build will expand beyond 1st level characters to allow optimized builds for levels 1 through 20. A DM could create a solid character for a player in less than 30 seconds when that's available, and then transfer that character.
No timelines available for these two features, but they are pretty high on the list.
Just realized you made it so I have to buy a race that SHOULD be free! Sorry, just a little angry I have to spend $2 just to use my one of my favorite races. PLEASE change that. If not, I will post a homerew versions that is the exact same so people can create their own Drizzt or their own Jarlaxle.

No, Wizards of the Coast made it that way.
Homebrew races don't exist yet.
Homebrew content requires moderator approval to keep people from doing things like that, which, by the way, would be illegal.

Oh. Oops. Still, I'm pissed.

It is really time consuming for us old people with kids- generally we only have time for this kinda thing at odd hours apart from each other.

I'm in the same boat as you, three young children and I hear you on the time thing. The last time I introduced a new technology (form fillable PDFs) to the group I did a little tutorial before the session. If you're starting a new campaign it's perfect during a session 0. Some people just aren't as computer savvy so I understand what you're saying.
In creating a character, I think I found a bug with Druids. With the Circle of the Land Feature, it gives the druid extra prepared spells (just like the cleric domains). However, the Forest Circle druid should be preparing both Spider Climb and Barkskin, but doesn't prepare Barkskin automatically. Seems like it was missed with the auto-prepare logic.

Thanks!
This is awesome, thanks!
My main desire for this is I am DMing a group that has already made paper characters, because they like doing things the old fashioned way, but they're game to let me transcribe them to this site for them. Which I can still do, and DID do, but then you need my login to edit them.
The other big-win for DM-created character is that I can move systems. I did that for my players when I moved us from Roll20 to Dicecloud+Discord. If I were consider making a switch here, it front-load the work for them to reduce tool fatigue.

Ask Wizards why they didn't include it in the free content then. DDB/Curse isn't going to give away content they had to pay licensing fees for for free.

To be more specific, DDB may not even be allowed to give it away if they wanted to.

My 5e Houserule Considerations. Please comment freely.
Well you can just have them login in advance of game and start a lvl 1 random character. Then you can just edit it as you want. shouldn't take long.
You forgot to include the drow as a character race option.
(Also, if it was on purpose, than you've lost a user)

Dude, I posted another thing like right after I realized that.

You're angry you have to buy the content you need to play that you would otherwise have to buy anyway? (PHB isn't a free product) I see...
Feature Requests || Homebrew FAQ || Pricing FAQ || Hardcovers FAQ || Snippet Codes || Tooltips
DDB Guides & FAQs, Class Guides, Character Builds, Game Guides, Useful Websites, and WOTC Resources
What really cracks me up are the guys that say, "I've already bought three copies of the PHB. Why should I have to pay for DDB?"
Um... there should have been some sort of internal dialog before this point, I think.

It's a long shot....but please can we buy additional charater storage slots without needing a subscription.
