I'm curious if anyone has any ideas on what could be done. Since OrcPub is apparently going down (for their very illegal practice of selling/giving away someone else's property) I expect there will be a flood of people coming here, some blaming DDB for the loss of OrcPub, and their knee-jerk reaction to seeing they have to pay for the non-Base non-SRD content will be to either leave or come to the forums where they post a thread about how it's either a) Not Fair, b) Greedy, c)Should not have to buy same material twice, or d) Make "helpful" suggestions about how WOTC could change things on a site that was made by Curse, who is owned by Twitch, who is in turn owned by Amazon who in turn is owned by Ares Macrotec.....*athem*
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is some sort of walled garden scenario where people would have to read through an explanation that DDB is not WOTC and that DDB is a similar but separate resource from the books before being allowed to post but that seems heavy handed, restricting, and honestly annoying for those of us who enjoy the forums.
I suppose another set of options would be mod approval before any new thread is automatically posted but that strikes me as tedious for the mods or some sort of checker that scans the body and title of the thread and points out any existing threads that have similar phrasing, though that would be an issue too as current AI tech does not always understand context. Anyway...just...ya...

The only realistic way I could see for quelling those posts to some extent would be to ban any new post from containing the word "OrcPub" but there's not really much other than that that can be done in an automated way
Personally, I find the constant posting about D&D Beyond not being owned by WotC to be as annoying as the posts asking for free stuff. It doesn't matter that it's a different company: the D&D logo is on the tin, and people who are complaining do not care who their money is or is not going to. What matters is that this is a different product; it is a digital content organizer, not a physical book. If people don't want to pay for the extended content, they don't have to use it.
Personally, all I want is for pricing posts to be moved to the feedback forum, where people can simply ignore them. The General Discussion forum is already a dumping ground for new people posting about things that obviously go in other forums, but it would be nice to at least keep that cruft out.
Presuming that D&D Beyond does not allow discussion of piracy, could the word(s) "orcpub" be added to an auto-moderation tool?
If anything, there are fewer complaints littered around the forums about "missing content" than there was during beta, which is a godsend. People mostly just don't understand the OGL/SRD and the concept of intellectual property.
1. Ignore them. Mods could create a standard boiler-plate response which gets posted in reply to the OP, and then the thread gets locked.
2. Create a sub-forum called "Wah Wah Waaaaahhhhh" into which mods move all threads that mention the cost of DDB compared to OrcPub.
Frankly, it's not DDB's problem to educate those people. Besides, we all know the community will school them anyway.
The mods have been doing a pretty great job of #1 already. Any time I see one of these posts come up, I just comment that it should get locked and it usually does within a couple of hours.
I don't know if there's been an official mod appreciation post, but they've been doing a fantastic job all around from everything I've seen. I know the devs can't always get to the forums to respond to every question (although they do a great job as well), so thanks for doing what has to be tedious work keeping these boards clean and civil.

Amen to that, there was almost a drinking game started around every time a moderator would post the "Only SRD, basic rules, EEPC and other free content are included in the beta". At some stages it was almost every second post, I know I was getting frustrated about it by the end so I'm not sure how the mods kept things together.
Getting back on topic, how about forcing people to read a condensed version of the half-dozen-or-so standard responses before their first non-Off-Topic post?

Older forums used to require that you read through a set of rules before you could even make an account. If you set that as a gateway, then the mods can automatically just delete any thread that violates those rules. As is, it's very unclear what is and isn't allowed on these forums and it's also very clear that people don't know the difference between WotC & DDB, or that the SRD is free but other content is not and that you don't get free access to DDB just because you own a physical copy of a book. Having accounts required to read through rules of posting and a FAQ of some sort before being able to create a DDB account, would save a lot of time and effort for mods and eliminate the constant stream of bitingly annoying posts about it.
Then again, I suspect that a lot of them are just one or two people making new accounts to constantly complain about it.
I also find it very odd that some people are fine that other books need to be paid for, but think the PHB should be free. It's still WotC IP, and costs the same as the other books. Just because other services host it, along with other sources, illegally for free, why should it be on here when this is a legitimate business partnered with Wizards?
The idea that it would be explicitly against forum rules to bring up feeling that you don't want to pay for the content, or want a discount, or whatever, is a really, really bad one and imo would be a bad look for DDB. Banning posts talking about sources containing pirated material that infringes copyrights? Sure. But if you're going to make a click-through rules thing, and you put up a rule that essentially says you're not allowed to talk about this thing that has, from a lot of people's views, even some people who use and appreciate this service a lot, some level of legitimacy, that's not going to go well.
I'm annoyed by those posts too, but they're pretty easy to ignore and I'm not convinced they're hurting anyone. Being annoyed or frustrated doesn't count.
ratwhowouldbeking's suggestion just upthread seems to me to be the most reasonable one.

and that's something that isn't going to happen on D&D Beyond. :)
The conversation may become repetitive and argumentative, but as long as people don't mount personal attacks on others, it's fine to be discussed.
if you find it repetitive and annoying, don't pop in and make a post saying it, just ignore the topic and let it go (unless of course you're a mod :))
I've been having these discussions for months now since the first pricing information was released. I fought tooth and nail to educate people on the facebook groups and forums I was a part of. The reason I continue to engage is because 1 out of 10 will actually listen and understand. Those people are worth my time to help educate and the stock answer the mods give doesn't always work (and that's okay). I am a communicator by nature and am always willing to discuss these sorts of things, but that is me personally.

and I have no problem with that. as I said if you find it annoying and repetitive stop posting -- you obviously don't. If you think it's worth it to contribute and help out, by all means do. I think there is nothing wrong with people asking this over and over, as a new customer would be completely overwhelmed by the amount of forum posts here, and may not even be familiar with how form posting/search works thus might actually be unable to see the other posts about the same subject.
However, asking them to ban anything that mentions it, or even just hopping in to complain about the fact that yet again another person asked isn't helping anything, or that person if they are legitimately looking for information and not trying to just "bash" the product.
I find several other threads annoying or pointless, I don't go into them to post that I think that though. I let them run their course, and the fact that they are there has no effect on my experience on the site. My comment was directed at the people who come into these threads knowing exactly what they are, and basically complaining that they exist. Just ignore it, let someone else respond to it.
I agree that actually having a huge required reading disclaimer or policy would be counter-productive, but it's a pretty funny thing to joke about.
I think an easy-to-access FAQ would be a good thing though, more so than just a sticky thread on here, but an actual reference page on the site that only mods and admins can edit and update.
But then again, you're still asking angry people to read a bunch of stuff... But DDB does have their own in-house video department now...
Another perk of a video is that it would likely be on the YouTube channel, so you could even post that link to reddit or facebook any time this topic comes up there (not so often anymore, but it still happens).
At the very least, when I start my fabled podcast (coming after tax returns get back next year lol), this will be something I'm sure I'll go on a nice rant* about.
