Ok I have a question that may have been answered, but I don't want to scroll through 71 pages to find out.
Can we still use anything on this site for free after it fully launches? Or do we have to buy all of the content and a subscription for any of the tools on here to actually be accessible?
Everything that is free now will remain free.
Note: there will be ads on the free account/content. That seems to be half of the $3/month Hero Tier benefit (the other half being more than 6 characters).

Actually, it's 1/3 of the Hero Tier; a Hero Tier subscription also allows you to add public homebrew content to your homebrew collection. And purchased content is guaranteed ad-free.
Question of what works best for my situation... I play only with my son. He controls a few characters and I help him by controlling another few other characters while I DM. He plays two characters and I play two for him. I want him to be able to access all the books and character sheets that I control and I want to be able to access his characters. Basically, I want him to use my account for characters and not his own account so that I can check on his characters. He has an iPad and would use that while we play to view and control his characters. So if I buy the most expensive subscription (the DM one) and purchase all the books, can he just use my account on his iPad while I use my iPad at the same time? Will he be able to always access books can we share character spaces while playing live and while not playing?

Hi Wexly,
if you take the Master Tier subscription and create a campaign, your son can join with a free account and get the access to every content you purchase. Moreover, you, being the DM, are able to view and modify as you like all the characters you son create in the campaign.
Thanks for reply. Just to be clear... he can access and control characters I create on my account with his free account? Or would I just have him log into my account on his iPad?

He can create characters on his own free account. And you can manage them while they're in your campaign.

Yes that's correct. By the way good on you for doing this with your son. I can't wait to play with my boys and daughter.

The account set as the DM for a campaign can see and control all characters in that campaign.
All other accounts in that campaign can only see (beyond very basic details) and control their own characters.
If the characters your son controls are created on his free account, you can both see and control them. He can also see and utilize all of your purchased content for characters in that campaign if you turn on content sharing for the campaign.
If the other characters are created on your Master account, only you can see and control them.

He'll be able to create characters as part of your campaign (using access to all your purchased product) and you'll be able to view and edit them as DM of the campaign.
Are we going to be able to give characters to other players? Like if I pre-gen a bunch for a group, can I then hand them over to the players to do with what they want?
I don't know... just some thoughts I had. Really late to the party here. I really want to use and like DnD Beyond... but it wasn't made for me or other people that own the books. It wasn't made for D&Ds existing fans. DnD Beyond was made for the new players.
As a rule, I generally avoid discussing a point-of-view in these threads - sticking to providing facts and ensuring that nobody is breaching forum rules.
I feel very strongly about this though - whatever your opinion of the commercial model is, I can assure you that D&D Beyond is not just made for new players.
The staff and moderators are all long-time D&D players, who love this game, many of us playing since the 80s and as such are really enthusiastic about the value that D&D Beyond can deliver at the table for existing groups.
Now, I don't have any influence over the commercial model - that's all down to discussions between Curse & WotC, so I am not able to comment on what is or isn't possible. From what has been said though, they looked at this sort of subscription and determined that it couldn't/wouldn't work. Again, I wasn't in those meetings, so don't have details.
You're right - it would have been AMAZING to have D&D Beyond lined up to launch along with 5th edition a few years ago, but we are where we are and we have it now and for the future.
We have a team of great people (the Curse staff) who are really committed to delivering an awesome product, that will continue to improve over time.
If you feel that D&D Beyond isn't for you, that's ok though. It's a sad fact that we have to face, that it's not for everyone.
Please check back in a few months though, to see the additional functionality!
Is it just me or is this business model woefully convoluted and backwards?
EXAMPLE: It's like paying monthly for Netflix, but that monthly subscription doesn't include the ability to actually watch videos. You have to pay for those separately. What your monthly Netflix sub gives you is the ability to watch videos online, multiple profiles, a Watch List, and the ability to download videos to your device... but you still have to pay for each individual video you want to watch.
Where's the monthly subscription that gives you all the site features and ALL the content? Curse/Wizards/Hasbro would make so much more money if they had a monthly sub for everything. Right now I pay $10 for Apple Music, $10 for Netflix, and $15 for HBO. I would (and most D&D fans that pay for above services) would pay $10-$15 a month for all the content and site features. They are really shooting themselves in the foot with the current business model.
Sure, you'd technically be buying all the content over again with a monthly $10-$15 subscription... but it's more affordable for the user and they get access to all the content RIGHT AWAY. Instead they are forcing us to either ignore their service or feel bad about re-buying each individual book when users are able to. I feel like a $10-$15 subscription for everything would appeal to ALL D&D folks... whereas the current business model really only appeals to people that are new and getting into D&D now.
DnD Beyond would have been AMAZING and I would have signed up and paid for it right away... IF IT WOULD HAVE LAUNCHED WHEN 5E WAS RELEASED. Now, like a lot of you, I already own EVERY 5E book so far. I would have really preferred to have a service like DnD Beyond before I bought all the books... but let's be honest here... all we ever really wanted was .PDFs or eBooks.

Don't forget DDB isn't made by WOTC, and although WOTC have endorsed Curse to build this, in the end, Curse is simply licensing the products from them. Subscriptions giving you access is way harder, and wizards might not be prepared to make a subscription based licensing model, if they prefer to sell the licenses individually. I have my card ready and waiting for the 15th because I'm not rebuying the content again. I'm buying access to a totally new way of getting all my information, quickly, easily and frankly, affordably. It would be kinda awesome to have a sub based model, but at $15 a month, it's cheaper in the short term, but more expensive in the long, and makes it really hard for people who only want specific things. The main problem I'd say is if wotc don't have a subscription license, it would be really difficult for Curse to do this without risking a lot of cost to themselves (THEY would be buying the license and "renting" them to you). Given that Wizards haven't had a great need for subscription licenses until now, I don't really see them changing any time soon.
To be clear, I have every single product from 5e, and a whole heap of lore books from 2e onwards. The reasons I will be rebuying are thus:
I like having the physical books to read away from the table.
I don't like page flipping at the table.
This isn't rebuying the books, it's paying for all the work the curse team has put into converting it into this format.
I understand not everyone is in the same financial situation, or mindset, but I am more than happy to pay for the privilege to have both. As has been stated before, if you're willing to put in the work. This tool will be totally free for you. You just homebrew any missing bits. Not having a go ("getting angry at you" in Australian) just offering a second viewpoint :)
Hero tier subscription also allows you to add publicly-shared homebrew content to your collection to use within the toolset.

Hello Curse people [and you lovely moderators],
What time does this go live on August 15 in UTC time? I live in Australia and have no idea when on Tuesday I can finally scratch my DDB itch :)
I have enjoyed all the discussions on here and love the passion I have seen towards this project [positive and negative]. Let's do this thing!

I feel disrespected. Because of that, I'm not going to be purchasing any DDB content...

This has probably been asked somewhere else before, will the maps in the campaign books be compatible with Roll20?
