I have already purchased all of the digital content available on your site and subscribed to your highest level of plan. However, you have made it impossible for me to give you more money in the form of gifts to my friends, family, fellow gamers, and colleagues. I would enjoy being able to give you more money for a product that has an almost 0 cost basis. I guess my only option is to use a third party like Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds to give the gift of Dungeons & Dragons this holiday. I could always send someone a book or just have an entire campaign designed around sharing content but then again that means I cannot share my payroll with you, something I would desperately like to do. Could you please find it in your business savvy hearts and souls to figure out redemption key purchases also know in the modern age as Gift Certificates?
Sincerely a loving, adoring, and life long patron.
They have said they are working as hard as they can to enable gifting, but it's not as simple as people would like. Code generation for redeemable products requires the involvement of legal teams as you're technically creating a product (a transferable) code and thus are subject to all sorts of regulations and policies. Then there's the fact you need to ensure your system is flawless as so to prevent code clashes.
Thank you for sharing your desire to give the gift of D&D to those you care about! We are honored to be your D&D delivery method of choice, and promise to continue to work diligently to keep you happy and playing games for years to come! As much as we would love to offer a gifting option for everyone to use, Davedamon is correct that it is sadly not available at this moment. It is something we have worked on for quite a while, and will continue to work on! But there are difficult obstacles in the way that we must clear in order to make gifting happen in a safe and easy to use manner. While we appreciate your offer to share your payroll with us, we are more interested in keeping your trust, and so we all must wait a little longer for gifting to be ready. However your passionate plea has been heard and agreed with, not just by LightGuardjp and DxJxC but all of us! And I promise you as soon as we have any news I will be sharing it far and wide across the internet with joy!
While I agree that if you're going to write a gifting system from scratch you do have those difficulties however you've already done this, the Essentials kit the code redemption and generation is done. Simply give me the ability to buy a code for any book and I will handle distribution, like every other gift card on the planet. Frankly it's upsetting that the Project Managers didn't think this through.

That was largely handled by WotC though. All DDB had to do was check the list of codes. They didn't have to generate them or have a legal responsibility to make sure they worked, that was all on WotC.
As a suggestion for one way to handle it, perhaps if gifting was [initially] limited to
only being able to gift to players in a campaign with you, and possibly have a time requirement (must have been in the campaign for more than 1 month) to try to cut down on fraud.
and it was immediate, so no codes required.
In the checkout, it would be an option as "Gift" with a drop down that lists the eligible players, and it would just be added to that players account instead of your own.
That would at least get people something, and then as the more complicated issues are resolved, expand to codes / etc if possible.
