Am I correct that the "options" section of the Homebrew Race creation tools only allows you to describe text based options? That nothing filled in there has a "mechanical" effect on the sheet?
For example, I was testing out the Homebrew Race feature by trying to recreate variant half-elves. My idea was to have one variant race, and use the options section to provide the various choices (instead of making a whole slew of half-elf variants). But I can find no way to do this, as there are no modifier tools in the options section.
Did I miss something? Am I not understanding how options work?
A good example for seeing data in action for the Options section is to make a copy of a Dragonborn and look at it's breath weapon racial trait.
I did, actually, before making this post, but there's nothing listed there under Options, so I thought maybe it worked differently.
I'll walk through what I checked:
I created a copy of the Dragonborn
I scrolled down to the Racial traits section and expanded it
In the list of traits, in the Draconic Ancestry row, I clicked on Edit
I see a table of options in the Description field, but there are no entries under the "Options" section below that
The same is true of Breath Weapon and Damage Resistance.
Is building the table in the Description sufficient? If so, how do I do that? Similar, if so, then how does the "Options" piece work?
If I do add an option, the only field choices I have are Name, Description, Activation Time, Activation Type, Prerequesite Racial Trait Option*, and Is Granted?. There are no options for adding modifiers or spells under the Option edit section.
*Prerequesite Racial Trait Option looks promising, given that the ancestry choice affects other traits, but there are no options available in the drop-down.
I'm guessing I just don't understand how this is supposed to work, thus questions.
It would appear that however the default races have been created is either different from, or incompatible with the homebrew options using them as templates.
Following the advice detailed above, I have taken a copy of the Dragonborn race. Going to the builder the copy is visible but when selecting I have no drop-down box available under Draconic Ancestry. Switching to the original Dragonborn race reveals this box.
Going back to my copy I click Edit on the Draconic Ancestry trait and after seeing the options section blank I add the following options: Red Dragon, Green Dragon, White Dragon. Returning to the test character in the builder, when I select Copy_of_Dragonborn as my race Draconic Ancestry is edged in blue and a drop-down box is now visible with the choice of Red, Green or White dragon.
I would guess that the process to create the template doesn't copy the option lists in the traits.
Say, @HartlessD20, when you have a chance to look into this on Monday, you might check out This report and my comment in the next post. I'm guessing that issue might be related to this one.

You'll need to add in modifiers under the different traits to effect changes in the character builder.

Hmmm, it may well be that the copy function isn’t going deep enough to capture all of those options on the existing official races.
I will check that out first thing Monday morning!

We just did a deploy that should fix the issue with not copying through the Racial Traits deeply enough.
Thanks!
