couldn’t find a thread for this already, but it appears the combat tracker crashes frequently now. Both sessions that I’ve DMed as well as for sessions I’ve been a player in and my DM has reported the same issue, we’ve had issues where the body content in the combat tracker goes blank (nav is still present and styled correctly). Upon refreshing the page, the state of the tracker is reset and all HP/initiative needs to be re-entered.
as far as I could tell, I recreated this issue after switching tabs in my browser and returning to DnDBeyond, though I’m not sure if that’s repeatable for QA.
the tracker was stable up until a couple weeks ago when myself and my DM both noticed this start happening.
Nav? The Combat tracker has no maps and nothing to navigate, so unless you meant something else an I’m not pickin’ up what you’re puttin’ down, I have to ask: Are you perchance using an extension like Beyond20?
As to the crashes you described, that has always happened whenever the browser page refreshes and all of that info is lost. It’s always been like that, it’s still only in alpha testing after all. Switching browser tabs back and forth while using the combat tracker is like playing hopscotch in a minefield, it’s not so much a matter of if it will reload on you, but when.
Apologies if above isn’t clear. By “nav” I’m referring to the top global nav across the site to clarify that it’s not the entire app that’s crashing, just the combat tracker.
I do use Beyond20 so that could def be what’s causing this. I’m assuming many other DnDbeyond users also use it so thought this might be applicable to many others as well. Idk how much DnDBeyond shares dev roadmaps and testing environments with key 3rd party developers to pre-empt potential conflicts when new code is pushed to prod, so not sure if somethings changed on Beyond20 or DNDB. Typically Beyond20 lags in minor version release compared to DNDB so just guessing it’s not something Beyond20 pushed that’s causing the issue.
I understand the Combat Tracker is still in alpha (which it’s been in for ages) and stability isn’t guaranteed. This issue seems to only have happened recently where stability has dropped a ton so thought it would be good to flag for devs.
From what I understand, most folks who use Beyond20 do so to export their DDB character sheets to a VTT and skip DDB’s tracker altogether. 🤷♂️
I know that DDB is doing some fairly substantial updates to their system behind the scenes currently, so that’s likely contributing too.
But that tracker has been resetting to Round 0 every time the page refreshes since it first launched. (That was one of the first three complaints ever listed about it if I recall.) I have given up on it currently, I use it to get all my statblocks in a convenient location to take advantage of the rollable features they added and just track initiative, HP, and monster consumables in my Notes app on my phone. My group’s main GM completely eschews everything DDB offers aside from character creation, and I think he only really uses that because I share my digital sourcebook library with the whole group.
Heck, DDB’s search function is currently more reliable than their combat tracker, and their search function is so deplorable it’s often faster to just navigate to whatever I am looking for directly via either the Rules or Sources tabs. 🙄 Hopefully they’ll get around to adding a gorram “save” function to it at the very least. Hopefully….
