I am creating a variant Tortle subrace and I am having issues modifying its base walking speed. I wated to set it to 20ft, but no matter what I seem to do, it stays at 30ft. I have a racial trait that has all of these modifiers in them (and yes, I have tried them all seperately as well).
I also have a different traight that sets the burrowing speed to 10ft, using the set innate speed (burrowing) modifier, and that one works, which just leaves me more confused. The is variant box is checked, and I set the race group to Tortle. Anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening?
The “Set” Modifier won’t work for the Walking speed because the base Tortle has its innate walking speed “Set” to 30. Whenever something in the system has two (or more) values Set, the system always uses the highest value.
So even though I have chosen the option in the editor to "Replace Base Race Racial Trait" -> Speed, with my own trait setting the speed, that doesn't overide the speed? Seems like something that is kind of broken.
Edit: I removed both of the set modifiers and just left the -10 bonus. Thanks to your FAQ page, I now relize that my vharacter sheet wasn't updating to the newest version of the race, as I had older versions in my collection, which it was defaulting to. So once I removed those, the -10 bonus worked to lower the walking speed! Thank you so much!

Correct. That’s because for base races, the Speed trait is just a dummy trait to display the information since the actual speed is hard coded to the race itself.

Link to the details page of the variant here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/subraces/617348-tortilce, which I don't think will be useful ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, but it can't hurt to include.

As for the “Bonus” Modifier, please see the General FAQ #s 6 & 6-B: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq).

As usual, happy to help.
