I am having a silly issue with the offensive word filter. One of my players asked for it, so I put it into our homebrew list. (I am not going to publish it, because I don't know where it came from.)
The problem is the name and description is being caught by the offensive word filter and we are getting "****erflies" in stead of "But-terflies" (remove the -).
Really? Is there anyway that this can be corrected? "But-terflies" is a little silly, but it is better then "****erflies".
What is this? Beavis and But-t-head? "giggle giggle giggle He said but-t. giggle"
Another user couldn't use the word but-ton (without the hyphen), another innocuous word. I've been able to use it before, so I wonder if it is a new glitch?
This is the first I'm hearing about this. Let us do some investigating, and one of the mods will get back to you on this. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!
While you are playing this musical instrument, you can create harmless, illusory visual effects within a 5-foot-radius sphere centered on the instrument. If you are a bard, the radius increases to 15 feet. Sample visual effects include luminous musical notes, a spectral dancer, ****erflies, and gently falling snow. The magical effects have neither substance nor sound, and they are obviously illusory. The effects end when you stop playing.
Asterix, asterix, asterix, asterix... erflies.
The 4-letters blocked out there do form a word, yes. And the word is not always appropriate for use. However, it is by no means and under no circumstances an expletive. In fact, using it to describe one's backside is only a single use for the word. First, it prevents you from sounding silly, because consistently using "backside" makes you sound like someone who refuses to acknowledge that that particular part of anatomy that everyone has does not in fact exist.
It is also a verb for hitting something with the specific connotation that the object used for striking it blunt, and the blow itself is quick with a short range wind-up.
It also means a container that has been designed to both gather and dispense something (usually liquid).
Another definition is subject, or target. Specifically, it is applied in regards to speech, designating the target as the subject of the dialogue, most often humor or sarcasm. In the specific case of archery, however, it means a literal target.
It also means mound or small hill.
The four letters are also required to spell a common dairy product common spread on toast or used as a grease substitute for cooking. A word that in turn is used in the word used to describe lepidopterans that are not moths.
It is also needed to spell a word meaning "answer" or "counter-argument".
Also need those 4 letters to describe an item used to fasten clothing or the act of fastening with said item. The same is true for its counter word of reversing the fastening. The same word also applies to a simple mechanism that is pressed to activate or engage a device.
I understand the need to censor. I am a father, after all, and will be teaching my sons to play D&D when they are old enough. That being said, when you censor go overboard on the censorship, it becomes an necessary distraction that causes more problems than is solves. I mean, "hell" is regarded by some as being a "bad word", but it is plastered over all manner of official material; but is not automatically censored, as you can see here. But I have yet to meet someone who is offended by the word "butt".
Alright, we've gone and removed some obvious words from the filter and things should start going back to normal. Because of caching, you might not see it working right away. If you find words that we've missed, please PM one of us and we'll look into it.

A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?
So I was reading through some magic item descriptions and happened across this:

Firehawk and I are tackling and re-educating the censorship filter on what words are reasonable for the D&D Beyond website.
I dunno how I would cope without my bastard sword!
