@Any moderator willing to look. All my content is synced, I own all the content. It's all enabled for my character. I still can't add a steel defender.
@Tolic: I'm sorry that there haven't been any moderators by to check your sheet. If your character is not part of a campaign already, I could send you a link to one of my campaigns, and I could take a look that way.
@Dominus Stonefield: what level artificer is your character? what subclass? What category of extra are you using? Can you still add it despite the notice?
Level 5 Artificer Battle Smith. Under extras it has a selection for the Battlesmith’s Steal defender... and once selected, it is where I see the notice.
When I helped Tolic with their issue, I discovered that the Steel Defender one can add via extras is the UA steel/iron defender, and does not match the stat block for the official Steel Defender as published in Tasha’s and ERftLW (at least not as updated). The issue with the Steel Defender (and the new Primal Beasts for Beastmasters and several other things) is that is uses your character’s proficiency bonus in places in the Statblocks that proficiency bonuses have never appeared before. That and adding those statblocks as monsters adds them to the searchable monsters list and creates problems for other players and DMs. So they are going to have to create a new system for these kinds of things.
In the meantime, you have two options:
1) you can look at the statblock by touching on the steel defender feature in the feature and traits section: this will pull up a sidebar with info, and if you scroll down you will see a statblock, although you will have to do some math to get numbers for some things.
2) you can homebrew a spell defender with the right stats and add to you character through the “misc” section of extras. You could start by making a copy of the current Steel Defender and edit as necessary, or build from scratch.
Ah, that's bizarre! Battle Smith Defender is still an option in Extras though, and I can choose pretty much any creature in the universe there except for steel defender, but yeah there it is! Thanks.
Its been integrated into the character sheet now. It's a part of the class features and traits.
Yes, I just noticed this myself. The thing that confused me is that if you look in Actions (specifically, Limited Use), there's a counter there labelled "Hit Points". If you look in Features & Traits, the same counter is labeled "Uses". I had not noticed the former until tonight (because the content in Actions is new, and the F&T content is the same), and was searching through the rules to figure out what "limited uses" meant for a Steel Defender.
This is very confusing until you find the Actions section.

Yeah, the Action is basically them making use of their current functionality in order to provide something that will give the player correct information about their companion (Drake, Fire Spirit, Steel Defender) that has features dependent on the character's PB/spell modifier/etc. It's just using the "Limited Use" for actions as a convenient way to indicate Hit Points.
This is meant to be temporary until they can implement something better in Extras.

I've gone into extras on my character and can't add it.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but if you do please tell me.
Do you have Eberron content turned on?

I have all comment turned on.
Hmm...I can access it on a test character. I would suggest posting a link to your character so a moderator can check on it for you.

I am having the same issue. I get a notice, “adding a creature of this category will be outside of normal game rules.”
I'd really like help with but I don't know if we'll get it.

He's not part of a campaign on ddb so that would be a great help.
Sent you a PM

I sure hope it's a temporary solution cause it's anything but convenient as is, and really confusing.
I agree - having the same counter be two different things in two places is not helpful when you're using DnDB heavily as a tracking tool.
