Limited Uses already get used for many, many different things on character sheets: Monk Ki Points, Sorcerer Sorcery Points, Barbarian Rages, Bard Song of Rest & Bardic Inspiration, Paladin Lay on Hands (which restores HP), and that's just a portion of base classes.
There was also some precedent for Artificers, since the Artillerist's Eldritch Cannon is implemented as a bonus action with HP represented as Limited Uses.
I agree that it'd be better to have creatures/features with Hit Points on the Extras tab, but until DDB is able to incorporate PB and other aspects of the character in an Extras stat block, this method at least provides the necessary information and a way to track things.

Just a clarification - I get the concept of limited uses. I'm not familiar with all of the cases you describe, but for the Paladin Lay on Hands and Barbarian Rages on the Features & Traits tab, the description above the uses explicitly states what the uses are. For Steel Defender, this is not the case, and that was the source of my confusion. I had to find it under Actions to see it actually described as Hit Points.
If the description on F&T was updated to indicate that, I think that would mitigate the issue (at least for me).
And yes, I agree that overall this is a good additional tracking mechanism.

Thanks for the additional context!
Ugg... would much perfer it to show up in extras like everything else :P
Cats go Moo!
I am not able to add the Steel Defender in my Extras
:-(
Its also impossible to attune the Steel Defender to any items or modify its stats at all, which you should be able to do.
4 years on and the Battlesmith Steel Defender is STILL not implemented properly.
Shame.
