The spell creates berries, it does not directly do any healing.
It will be up to every GM to let their table know which way they swing. It should be noted that it's pretty darn ridiculous to have a lvl 1 spell heal for 40 hp.

While I agree that it probably shouldn't, under Rules As Written it does, as clarified in Sage Advice here.
There is a slight change here with the 2024 update, though. The 2024 version of Disciple of Life now says that it only applies to spells cast with spell slots. This means that if you cast Goodberry with the once-per-day free casting you get from Magic Initiate, it should not benefit from Disciple of Life. However, if you cast it using a spell slot, it should.
I would allow it, but mostly because I cannot see before me any meaningful difference between 1 hp and 4 hp at any tier of play. Maybe someone with more experience could point out how I am wrong, but from my experience, any monster that hits a PC is going to sleep that PC at 4 hp.

If you look at it from the perspective of one creature eating one berry in the middle of a fight, you're right, that's not going to make a huge difference most of the time. But if the Disciple of Life bonus is added to each berry, and someone eats all of them in rapid succession out of combat, now you're talking about the difference between 10 HP and 40 HP. The latter is more than double the best you can do with a level 1 Cure Wounds even with Disciple of Life tacked on.

That's a totally fair point and now that you pointed it out, I can understand the concern from others. From what I have seen though, unless there is a chase going or a time-sensitive event the players are trying to stop, they are going to throw up a rest request when their HPs are dropped to a level where 40hp can make a big difference out of combat. So for me, I am still pretty meh. Good callout though, thank you.
I just looked at the actual rules, and they seem to suggest this no longer works.
When a spell you cast with a spell slot restores Hit Points to a creature, that creature regains additional Hit Points on the turn you cast the spell. The additional Hit Points equal 2 plus the spell slot’s level.
Unless we are now ruling that this feature can change the past, this combo should no longer work. (emphasis mine)

Oh, good catch, I totally missed that. Yeah, with that language in there it shouldn’t work at all even if a spell slot is used.

I was under the impression that good berry no longer benefited from the life’s clerics disciple of life feature.
however my character sheet is showing goodberry as healing for 4, suggesting the combo is still in effect.
The build is lv 3 life cleric with the guide background granting access to Druid carries and lv1 spell.
can anyone confirm one way or another.
It really should not and would not in my game.

I've added this to the list of things for the team to look at.
