IME, the versioning and updating system for even non-published feats is horrendous. It was caching. It's always caching. My b. Here's my situation:
Made a homebrew feat a month or so ago.
Forgot to add a nightvision qualifier to it.
Edit it to add a nightvision qualifier with text.
Of course, a player has this already, so that doesn't do anything.
Create a new feat that's a copy of the old feat.
Delete old feat.
Now I see the new feat named as "COPY_OF_Old Feat Name" and that won't change, even though the name is now just "Old Feat Name" in the Homebrew Creator. That won't do.
Recreate that feat again (and delete "COPY_OF_Old Feat Name"), but make sure to have all character sheets closed while I do it and don't open before I save the name.
Save the name as "Old Feat Name".
Go into character sheet, the feat named "Old Feat Name" still clearly uses the old feat, that I've since deleted. Awesome
Recreate the feat a third time, but name it "Old Feat Name v1.6" this time, hopefully for sanity? "Old Feat Name v1.6" does not appear in the Manage Feats section...
Wait like 10 or so minutes. Now "COPY_OF_Old Feat Name" is gone, so is "Old Feat Name" (the original), but now "Old Feat Name v1.6" shows up and so does "Old Feat Name" (the feat I made in step 8).
So I just have no idea what will happen when I edit a homebrew in use by one of my players and it scares me to do so. For clarity, this feat is used on one character sheet, which is in one campaign, that I am the DM of. It's my only campaign and the feat isn't published.
Any tips or ideas or... sanity here? I have now spent 30 minutes adding 6 words to one feat.
EDIT: Best thing? The copy feat feature never copies the Snippet, so I just lost that and get to rewrite it...
If the homebrew isn't published, you can freely edit it and it'll update in all locations after the changes propagate. Due to caching, this can take a while to update.
If the homebrew is published, you need to do a few extra steps due to how the system is set up to prevent negatively affecting users who've added your homebrew
Select Create New Version
An unpublished copy will be added to your creations
Make your edits to that version
Publish it, which will replace the older version (which is still available in the version history)
Your players will need remove the old version and add the new version
As long as your feat has not been published, your player will automatically be updated to the new feat, no problemo. If your feat has been published, they will retain the old version until they manually replace it, no problemo.

Oh my god, there's caching!!!! Thank you so much!!! I had hard refreshed, but never figured there'd be something on the server. This answers why I was getting random updates.
Thank you both so much! IamSposta, those resources are really helpful, personal thank you for compiling them.
