The problem right now is that, as part of magical secrets we are supposed to be able to add Cantrips as part of magical secrets. Right now, if we add a cantrip as a part of magical secrets is takes away from the number of cantrip we can learn from the bard cantrip list.
I create a level 1 bard and add spells, it doesn't matter which ones, that's not the point. Choose any subclass, doesn't matter which. Now, acording to the bard table we have a set number of cantrips at certain levels. https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#TheBardTable we get a 3rd cantrip at level 4 and a 4th cantrip at level 10. Now the issue begins at level 10 when you has access to magical secrets for all bards, but can start at level 6 if you are a Bard of lore. Magical secrets is supposed to let us choose a new spell ranging from a cantrip to the highest level spell we can currently cast. level up all the way to level 20 and for all of you magical secrets choose cnatrips.
The problem happens when you add a cantrip as part of magical secrets. If you add a cantrip as part of magical secrets it actually counts against the number of cantrips you know and gives an error. From what I understand, the number of cantrips we know on the Bard table should be the cantrips we know from the bard spell list. Magical secrets should let us choose cantrips.
Right now it will let us choose cantrips, but gives an Exclamation mark in a circle telling us we know 10/4 cantrips. It's not actually an error but the program says that it is. Not only that, but if we add the cantrip as a part of magical secrets before we add the cantrip as part of the 10th level bard's cantrip gain( the Bard table says we should have 4 Bard cantrips at level 10), it won't let us add a bard cantrip like we should be able to.
Okay, I'm going to add something else I'm noticed. Once you have added all of the cantrips from magical secrets, you will find that if you remove ANY cantrips you added from the bard spell list to try and switch out a cantrip, you CANNOT add a cantrip from the bard spell list until you remove all the cantrips you added from magical secrets. This is a bug and needs to be fixed. we shouldn't have to edit our character and remove all of the magical secrets spells to add bardic spell back to our character.
From the section in the bard writes up on magical secrets, emphasis mine
The chosen spells count as bard spells for you and are included in the number in the Spells Known column of the Bard table.
This is the problem. On the table it lists 4 cantrips for the Bard at level 10. But if you add Cantrips from the magical secrets before you add the 4th cantrip at level 10 from the bard spell list it won't let you add your 4th bard cantrip. also if you add multiple cantrips from the magical secrets and then remove one of your bardic cantrips you cannot add another bardic cantrip until you remove all cantrips you added though magical secrets.
That's the point. Your Magical Secrets cantrips are counted in among the 4 cantrips you can know. If you have 4 Bard cantrips at level 10 the Magical Secrets shouldn't actually let you pick any - because you already know 4.
It's not 4 + Magical Secrets known cantrips. It's 4.
If you know 3 cantrips as a bard and used your magical secrets feature to add a cantrip, you now know 4 cantrips and are at your limit. This is the way it is supposed to work. That’s what the rule I quoted means. When you talk about removing all of your magical secrets cantrips, if doing so brings you down below 4, that’s why you can add more. If you have to go lower than that to add bard cantrips, then there may be a bug. Please post a link to your character so the moderators can check.
The benefit of Magical Secrets is not additional spells. It doesn't let you learn "more" spells. It just lets you choose spells, as part of your normal level-up, from any spell list instead of just the bard spell list.
The only exception is the Additional Magical Secrets feature of the College of Lore bard subclass.

I don't think you read the problem. At tenth level you get 4 bard cantrips, magical secrets lets you add spells that can be CANTRIPS or a spell you can cast at your level. The problem is that when you add a cantrip from magical secrets before you add a cantrip from your class level DNDBeyond won't let you add a 4th Bard cantrip. You should be able to use all of your magical secrets to add only cantrips if you want to. But in DNDBeyond if you add cantrips using magical secrets it will give you an error in DNDBeyond and it will show you have more cantrips than you should. Here is a link to a character I created. https://ddb.ac/characters/35968674/KKIfr4 I used all the magical secrets to add cantrips and it says I have 9/4 cantrips with error sign next to it like I shouldn't have that many cantrips. I should have 10/4 cantrips but I removed one cantrip I earned from leveling up.
This is an error in DNDBeyond! I should be able to remove a bard cantrip and replace it on a level up, but currently, DNDBeyond is counting Cantrips we add though magical secrets as Bardic cantrip and we cannot add a 4th bardic cantrip or exchange current cantrips unless we remove every single cantrip that was added as a magical secret first.
Magical Secrets
By 10th level, you have plundered magical knowledge from a wide spectrum of disciplines. Choose two spells from any classes, including this one. A spell you choose must be of a level you can cast, as shown on the Bard table, or a cantrip.
The chosen spells count as bard spells for you and are included in the number in the Spells Known column of the Bard table.
You learn two additional spells from any classes at 14th level and again at 18th level.
This being said adding cantrips would add to the number of spells you know but DNDBeyond is not counting them as spells know but rather cantrips against the number of Cantrips a bard knows.
If you look at the character sheet I provided https://ddb.ac/characters/35968674/KKIfr4 you will see that problem. If you count up all the spell you will see he knows 25. 9 cantrips (6 from magical secrets) and 16 other spells. The number should be 26. 4 Bardic cantrips and a total of 22 other spells, 6 of which come from magical secrets. That is where the problem comes in. Magical secrets is working not CORRECT in DNDBeyond. The reason the character I provided only has a total of 25 spells instead of 26 is that, if you add cantrips using magical secrets in DNDBeyond they count against CANTRIPS, not magical secret spells. So your Bard Cantrips cannot be added if you add cantrips from Magical secrets. In fact, if you create a level 20 bard and add all cantrips for magical secrets before you choose any of your other spells you will see that you can only have a total of 22 spells 16 spells that are level spells, and 6 cantrips that were added using magical secrets.
If you follow my guide in the first posting and create a Bard but add cantrips for all of your magical secrets you will see this.
That is why I am saying this is a BUG. Magical secrets should be ANY spell from a cantrip to the level you can currently cast. But is is counting them as cantrips and reduces the number of cantrips you can learn.
That’s because any spell granted by Magical Secrets (including Cantrips) still counts against your total number of spells (or Cantrips) known. If your Bard is only allowed to have 4 Cantrips, and you have 4 Cantrips, then you’re full up and can have no more. That includes a combination of regular Bard Cantrips and any Cantrips from Magical Secrets.
Your total allotted Cantrips are 4.
You had 3 Bard Cantrips, and then you added a Cantrip from Magical Secrets. 3+1=4
Does 4=4? Yes. Then you have hit your maximum allowable Cantrips.
The only bug is that the system ever lets you learn more than 4 if you pick them in the wrong order, because if you already have 4 Cantrips, you are not allowed to have another. That’s the bug.
I went back and I'll leave the character up for you to see this. I was wrong, but it is WAY WORSE than I said. Under known spells, it does show 25 spells. But it only shows the three Bardic cantrips, but since I used magical secrets to add the cantrips I actually know 31 spells. It allows me to choose 22 spells from level 1-9 since I only choose cantrips for my Magical secrets spells where it should have only let me choose 16.
It's 4.
that's part of the bug, which I wrote about. If we're not supposed to be able to have more than 4 cantrips then magical secrets in DNDBeyond shouldn't let us choose more cantrips after we have four from magical secrets. DNDBeyond is letting us choose all cantrips for our magical secrets.
That's why it's a BUG. When you add spell from MAGICAL SECRETS it's not counting them correctly against our spells. We should have 4 cantrips, 16 bard spells, and 6 spells from magical secrets. Currently, magical secrets will let us add all cantrips even if we have already added 4 cantrips before that.
Oh, that's not the only bug. If you create a level 20 Bard in DNDBeyond and leave all the magical secrets blank and go straight to adding spell DNDBeyond will let you add 4 cantrips and 22 spells. You can then go back and select spells for your magical secrets letting you add 6 more spells than you should be able to. Making it 4 cantrips and 28 spells. But you can also choose 6 cantrips for your magical secrets making it so you have 10 cantrips and 22 spells.
The BUG is that magical secrets allow you to add more spells than you should have if you select spells for your class before selecting magical secret spells. It shouldn't let you choose cantrips if your cantrips are full, and it shouldn't let you choose more spells if you spell list if full.
