Hello! Hombrew Barbarian Subclass - spellcasting, can't seem to have spells higher than 1st level? I have cantrips and first level spells, for some reason I have 2 cantrips and 4 1st level.
The design is supposed to be a crossover between a warlock style casting (2 slots at highest level, but with druid prepared spells...)
At the moment I managed to get it to display cantrips and first level but not 2nd or higher (even though they were added at the same time as the 1st level spells) it's a specific spell list).
Unfortunately, each of the official classes defines how spellcasting works for it (or subclass for Fighter/Rogue) - currently there is no official Barbarian subclass that provides spellcasting, so it's not possible to build the rules for that on the back end.
Is there a way to make a barbarian subclass that has the druid spell list and spellcasting ability? (lpreparing spells) Because I managed to make first level spells.... I don't understand why can't it show second level or higher....
Until such time as Wizards of the Coast publish rules for a Barbarian subclass with spellcasting capabilities, we don't know how to configure the spells system.
As an example - take a look at how different spellcasting is for Wizard, Cleric & Warlock.
At this point, we would be guessing completely if we were to add spellcasting support for Barbarian subclasses and that would be bad, because if/when official rules are published, we'd have to change to fit those, causing any homebrew subclasses using the rules to change with it.
I am hopeful that, at some point in the future, we'll be able to expand the system for how subclasses are created, to allow the definition of spellcasting in full, as part of that subclass, but it's just not available currently.
Just to say that I just realised that I can still do it - if not how it was intended - which is to create a feat with the specific spell list which will at least show me the spells I need and then if I add Pact Magic with it I can still mark when I use them - it ain't much but it works!
The Pact Magic feature will only create a subclass version of that feature for Blood Hunter subclasses. For every other class, it just makes the Subclass version of the Spellcasting feature (just like Eldritch Knight & Arcane Trickster have), but with the wrong name. Conversely, adding Spellcasting to a Blood Hunter will also result in the Subclass version of the Pact Magic Feature.
