actually, something that just came to mind for me is something where the actual Steel Defender is like... a little robotic hamster, but its "hamster wheel" is just a big armored ball. Although now that I think about it I think that's just an Overwatch character.

Hammond may be the best overwatch character.

“I will take responsibility for what I have done. [...] If must fall, I will rise each time a better man.” ― Brandon Sanderson, Oathbringer.
So for my steel defender I have it to where My dwarf will randomly reconstruct him into a different creature and he also renames him. Basically the Idea was he was a heartless scientist that just rebuilt his creation any time he gets destroyed. After while he had some character growth and keeps the same name and only improves on his invention. We even flavored it to where he is essentially my bag of holding, and that he has storage capabilities; I also joke that my intelligence checks are me actually calling him over and researching the answers in a book.
Found an upgrade to my intentionally creepy Steel Defender. Instead of a tarantula - a Tailless Whip Scorpion. Don't look it up if you're an arachnophobe - seriously.
I want to make a Warforged Battle Smith who’s Steel Defender looks exactly like the character.
I like that idea lol. I imagine a narcissistic Battlesmith who made their steel defender in their own image. Wherever they go their steel defender just poses and flexes on everyone.
So... I might have one of the odder concepts for a Steel Defender... it's basically a walking workbench. Houses all the tools for my Artificer/Forge Cleric when they aren't being used. Usually doesn't attack; I describe the "deflect attacks" more as furniture getting in the way of enemy combatants.
I also have a Gnomish Artificer, currently playing a re-skin of Tomb of Annhilation and have contemplating skinning my Steel Defender as a cross between a Deinonychus and a Pteranodon, which I use as a mount... which can also (potentially) fly. Am I missing something about the Steel Defender that would specifically preclude a flying Steel Defender? I know it doesn't have a fly speed listed, but there doesnt' seem to be anything in the text that would overrule it...
I know Homunculus has a potential fly speed listed... but in the same way, one could potentially create a Homunculus that was incapable of flight, right?
A steel defender with an innate fly speed is probably not going to fly (pun very much intended), but you can cast fly once you hit 9th level. So it is not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
Now I am imagining a battle smith flying a one-person combat airship that the steel defender is desperately trying to keep flying while loudly complaining in a series of beeps and whirs.

Bark side up, bark side down, it really, truly does not matter.
My steel defender so far has been a canine(basically imagine Battle Cat from Heman, but as a dog), and a backpack with four arms that it uses to attach to my waist and arm straps, that can extend my height, and grab things(think Doc Ock).
One of my favorite steel defenders to date, is a Terminator (ala. Arny) minus the flesh. Still trying to come up with a way to give it a body job (maybe a Manual of Flesh Golems if I can find ione). :)

Watch your back, conserve your ammo, and NEVER cut a deal with a dragon!
What do you folks think about combining the Steel Defender and Homunculus Servant? Maybe have the HS riding the SD? Or the SD be the body and the HS be the head to form a large construct? Homebrew ideas are fine.

Sure. That honestly never crossed my mind. BB-8 as a Steel Defender honestly makes sense.

I don't have it on D&D Beyond, but my steel defender isn't even a actual creature. It is sort of like a cross between a crab and a spider.
whoa good drawing did you do that? (the workbench)

Other then that, i havent used him any other way.
