I mean I know it just gets more and more powerful... I mean when you have a level 17 paladin in your group you can get him an extra 7 hit points on average right....
It seems such an irrelevant skill since in general DMs will make the encounters based on your fighting ability, so the song of rest will be already taken into consideration, it doesn't confer you any advantage.
My experience with it is that it's been quite useful. I've not been disappointed with it at all.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
The only time Song of Rest has been not useful is when the PC that needed it the most had already spent all of their Hit Dice for the day during a previous Short Rest.
2nd level feature and you;'re talking up levels that most groups never get to. I'd argue that you lack perspective on "value"

Considering the other trait you're getting at level 2 is the awesome Jack of All Trades, Song of Rest is a bonus, and IMO a perfectly good one. If you're in a gruelling dungeon trek and trying to take your short rests sparingly then every little bit extra helps, especially if you roll well as it could be equivalent to a free hit die for some characters.
Not sure why you'd feel the need to whine about free healing.

Fair enough if you only play 1st to 3rd level characters then yeah its great.
Doesn't look like you're getting much support.

That's funny. When bards came out in the playtest song of rest was a higher level ability and I campaigned to get it moved down to second level by comparing it to lay on hands.
Song of rest at 1d12 in a party of 5 using the 2 short rest expectation is worth 65 HP of bonus healing on a 2nd level ability. That's not bad. It's pretty typical.
It's not restricted to PC's, however, and has a range of hearing. It's also possible to take more than 2 short rests.
Wilderness or town in the same party taking 4 rests turns that into 130 HP healing. Applied to 30 soldiers once inspiring the troops and it's 195 HP healing.
Song of rest has a lot of potential because it's multiplied by the number of recipients and multiplied again by the number of rests. The only restriction is time and hit dice to spend.
I'm not disappointed in single target healing numbers when it's not a single target ability.
I'm playing a bard in a dungeon crawl, currently level 5. The healing from SoR isn't game changing, but it certainly helps. It usually spares people from spending a healing die, so we haven't had a situation where anyone has run out of healing dice yet.
I kind of wish the die grew at the same rate as bardic inspiration, but it's still been a helpful feature.
It depends on the adventure, obviously you aren't going to always get a lot of short rests all the time, but it IS some free healing that the group wouldn't have had otherwise. You will have situations where that little bit of hp really did matter in healing and if that didn't cost a spell slot to get then all the better.
I will throw the OP some partial support. Lay on hands is a better ability at higher levels because it's more versatile, can higher heal focus on to targets or get split up, and can be used in or out of combat without the rest. The higher potential from song of rest does not change that.
Song of rest is better at lower levels still. LoH plays catch up.
If you do the recommended 2 short rests per adventuring day, Song of Rest is roughly the equivalent of two extra Hit Dice per party member. That’s not chump change.
Like how disappointing is this class feature.

17th level 1d12 per short rest hp restored compared to a paladins extra 1d8 per attack at level 11.

Not only is it more valuable at low levels, but for dungeon crawls and other adventures where sustainability is important, it can be a lifesaver.

My party is level 5. We have 3 "fighter" class (d10) players and 4 "other" class (d8) players.
During a short rest, rolling 1 HD each we could expect to receive 34 pts of healing. SoR alone provides an additional 24 pts of healing.
Those extra 24 points of healing are points our paladin does not have to provide.
We will continue to enjoy this benefit all the way up the ladder, so I don't know of anyone complaining about SoR.
Folks complain about Bards for Reasons, but SoR isn't one of them I hear.
