Hey! I'm new to playing a Cleric and I'm torn on what to pick after growing to level 4 -- a new feat or ability score improvement. Curious what other people think might be most useful for my character build:
We are playing a Southlands campaign and I am in a group with a fighter, barbarian, sorcerer, and bard. I would say my role so far in the party is leaning more towards offensive/tanky. I love my healing abilities but I don't want that to be all she can do. I only want to lean on those when it's absolutely necessary. I am trying to create some inner conflict with themes of Life/Death in how she deals with enemies (she's got a bit of a god complex) which is why I'm leaning towards making her a bit more battle focused vs. healing.
With an odd wisdom score, I’d look at a wisdom 1/2 feat. There’s lots of interesting ones. Fey touched is very popular, gift of the gem dragon or telekinetic can be good and give you some battlefield control. Otherwise, warcaster. Life cleric means heavy armor means Dex does almost nothing for you.

This👆I would definitely choose a Wis half feat. You’ll get the most mileage out of something like that at this juncture.
Note that wisdom score is less relevant for maintaining spirit guardians if you're playing those levels. Having lower concentration rolls means paladin's aura of protection has more relevance and, for offense melee battle cleric below 17th level, warcaster is better than resilient constitution. 1st melee oriented cleric feat warcaster, 2nd feat resilient constitution, 3rd life domain preserve life channel divinity feat tough, 4th and 5th choices round out group needs; maybe this path has boring, less quirky/fun choices, but they maintain concentration under pressure :B
Spirit guardians damage happens at the beginning of your opponents turn. Smart enemies will target you with attacks when you cast it in order to drop the spell. With no protection on your con saves it will drop almost immediately. If you are going for spirit guardians as a main component on your build you should go with BOTH resilient and warcaster before evening out your odd Wisdom.

I will add another recommendation to this! There's a lot of benefit to be had by gaining an additional point to your WIS modifier in general.
Thank you all so much!!! I think I will be going with that. I played a circle of dreams druid in tomb of annihilation so I absolutely love anything fey related. I think I will go with Fey Touched!!
Little late to the scene but another option is to get a split ASI in Con and Wis. With the plan to get resilient con at level 8 (or you could do it the other way round).
Needing warcaster for components is really down to your DM. You can cast spells with a material component using your shield emblam as a focus, Technically for spells without a material component but with a somantic component you would need to drop your weapon , cast the spell and use object interaction to pick your weapon up, which can cause issues if you want to interact with another object or cast a spell as a reaction but mant DMs ignore this. At lower levels warcaster does help with concentration more than resilient con but it doesn't take until level 17 to catch up. If you neeed to roll exactly 11 then advantage is worth +5 if you need anything else it ia worth less so at level 13 for concentration resilient is strictly better than warcaster. In fact most of your checks will be DC10 meaning you would need to roll a natural 7 at which point advantage is worth about +4, I therefore think that from LEvel 9 to 12 warcaster and resilient are roughly on a par for concentration.
As the resilient split ASI / resilient con will increase you con modifier to +3 at level 8 resilent will boost your con saves by +4 and at level 9 by +5.
On top of that resilient con will help with othe con saves which are very common in the game for example to resist poison.

Options I'm thinking through:
Thanks ☺️

War caster since you are using a weapon and shield or crossbow, so don't have a free hand to cast spells.

Warcaster. Making Con saves is really important. As noted above your hands are full as well. You also have an even Constitution.
