Hi all, fairly new to the game and only ever played Paladins or Rangers so far.
The group I play with will start a new campaign very soon and I want to play something different this time, more of a support than damage dealing class with some cool background story/Roleplaying flavour potential.
I like the idea of a Cleric that is not the usual goody two shoes cleric. Having played "Pillars of Eternity 2 - Deadfire" quite a bit - I love Xoti, who is a Cleric in the game but she is a Worshipper of "Gaun" - an aspect of Eothas (one of the Gods in that game) focusing on the cycle of rebirth.
One of her weapons is the "Lantern of Gaun" which she uses to collect the souls of the Dead. She is a "Reaper": A shepherd of lost souls, gathering them and storing them safely until the god of rebirth returns to allow them to be reborn. She is very much a support Cleric using buffs/debuffs/heals but can also do some damage.
Is it fair to say that either the Grave or potentially the Death Cleric come closest to this in D&D 5E?
Do any of you play a Grave/Death Cleric and could you perhaps share your impressions?
Death domain is probably closest to what you're looking for as they are all about necrotic powers, draining life forces etc. Death is more of a melee focus build whereas Forge is more caster like. Forge also is more about keeping things alive and thwarting death than causing it. I have not played either myself but it sounds like Death is probably most in line with your character concept. For a more earthy type focus that's not far off you may check out the Circle of Spores druid.
As a Grave cleric player, I think Grave is the way to go. While I haven't played the game you're basing the character on, she sounds like a benevolent protector of the line between life and death, which is what Grave is about. Death is more about necromancy and dark magic. Plus, if you're interested in a more support focused build Grave is also a better choice: at low levels, it's debatably the best healer in the game.

Based on your description, I think a Grave Cleric would fit better than a Death one. Death is more about enhancing your weapon attacks.
