That's not the kind of creative leeway I was talking about. I'm just saying that a druid could wear studded leather, etc., if you can make a convincing argument that its made of natural material. Ultimately, it's up to the DM anyway.
Maybe this has already been suggested in this thread. But someone with proficiency in smith's tools and the 4th level spell fabricate ought to be able to conjure up a suit of natural material breastplate or half plate.
