How do you keep track of animals you can take shape of? My go to is an Ape! As im only lvl 3 we haven't adventured very far from our town, so I'm limited. That being said I do love the multi on the Fist attack.
As for my Animals, I have my character taking notes on everyone he sees. He writes his own beastiary and I type it up in an excel spread sheet for stats and insert it into a word document so I have them all handy!

Current Character~ Anastael Lasselom, Druid of the Moon Lvl 3
Usually, I let the player decide three animals to start. Then He wrote down every animal encountered, aloowing him to wildshpae into thos animals.
Personally as a druid, When the quest is not that difficult, I used to prepare the spell Locate animals or plants, in order to increase the number of animal I could wildshape into.
I’m playing Lizardman Druid in a GM’s homebrew games. One of the first questions I had when the concept of Wildshape came up was “Are there dinosaurs in your game?” He laughed, said "yes!", and showed me a picture of a dinosaur on his map!
Personally I’m looking forward to the Giant Spider and possibly some felines. So far I've only used the Giant Spider to "tie up" a prisoner.
Personally I think the Lion is better then the Tiger. They have the same AC, the Lion has 10 less HP and no darkvision, and loses a die size to all damage. In exchange it gain Adv on all attacks with an ally within 5' and has 50' more movement. I'm looking forward to charging, hitting with my claw from Adv, if they fail the Pounce check I get to bite as a Bonus Action then I'll back up 20' to do it again next turn. (Yes, I'll draw an Attack of Opportunity, but they are prone so they are at DisAdv)
Sidenote 1: What I’ve never understood is why a “Swim Speed” warrents needing to be a higher level. I totally get the freedom of a Flight speed, but a Swim Speed? It just means aquatic or swamp druids have fewer cool things and I don’t understand the “power advantage”.
Sidenote 2: I don’t get the restriction on what you can turn into. Ok, sure there is the idea of what animals a caster as experienced, but this is the primary ability of the Moon Druid. The books have a *very* limited list of animals and no one tells a Wizard “you can’t learn Fireball because you’ve never seen it cast.” The Land Druid gets every spell in the book automatically plus Domain.
If you need to justify it: lets assume there are other Druids around (and someone taught you the Druish Language), wouldn’t every master show off every form she has ever learned to her students? Wouldn’t travelling Druids share their the forms of exotic creatures?
Sidenote 3: Keep in mind the habitats of most most predators were FAR larger then they are today. For example Lions were creatures known about well enough to be common in the art from England and Italy to China.

May I suggest you the velociraptor? It is a small beast but it has multiattack (well it is good for Land Druid, due to the CR restriction).
As per the restriction on which animals to can transform into, I can understand why there is. Being a druid is a matter of connection with nature, so you have to experience it. But I like the idea that in a druidic circle, they "show" as many wildshapes as possible.

Having heard of something and knowing how it actually moves and lives and what it's capable of are very different things.
Reference this Atlas Obscura article that discusses how Medieval artists drew animals they never saw (specifically the elephant). Most of it based on hearsay or interpretation of others accounts. Do you think a druid that had never actually encountered an elephant would get it right?
That being said it doesn't break the game to have a wide array of animal forms. This I think, is an instance of the designers instilling reasonable roleplay basis into the class.

My DM has stated that I have to observe the animal before being able to change into it. Even if I saw another druid do it, it wouldn't be the animals natural behavior, so I cwas unable to learn its full array of skills, just it's likeness. I like this, it's a little limiting but I still get to become them after a brief observation!

My go to currently is the Giant Hyena. You get 50 speed, a crazy amount of HP, and when you bring an enemy to 0 you get Rampage (half your speed and a free bite). Plus, I love hyenas. Just imagine the creepy laughter and glowing eyes as this runs at you for a bite.

Giant Hyena to scout a Gnoll Stronghold: +1 Inspiration.
I'm looking forward to level 4, where I can eat my enemies! (Giant Toad)
I really love the Giant Spider: It can walk on the walls and ceiling so very little gets in my way, the ability to "net" my enemies, and if we want to take them alive, it has great RP value as when the GM asks "how do you tie them up?" a cocoon works very well.
I just turned level 3. I'm looking forward to using my 2nd level slot to:
Action: cast Darkness
Bonus Action: turn into a Giant Spider (has Blindsense 10 feet). I now have an AC:14 with DisAdv to be attacked and I have a +5 to hit with Adv including 1d8+3 percing and 2d8 poison on a failed save.

I love it! I just got level 4 on mine and the choice of giant octopus intrigues me. And, at level 3 you can eat things, as a giant hyena I eat what I kill allll the time (after the party loots it of course).

I made this for the druid in my group, as she was always looking through the monster manual for stats on beasts:

Go to Wild shape will vary by level, but I find Dire Wolf to be very good for CR:1 - has advantage on attack and knocks targets prone.
Brown Bear is also amazing for damage, as it gets two attacks.

I love the druid class, but I don't really like the low amount of uses. Should I just increase the number of uses, but maybe reduce the duration?
