Good read has I just started a Tabaxi Monk. I was seeing it as just a different way to punch. If you follow some of you way of thinking, that would mean that your claw also get stronger as you level up but it's the same claws... Calling them useless ... they are in a monk point of view as your fist do the same damage. But as another class, it could be a welcomed addition.
I went Tabaxi only for RP purposes as well as a reason why my monk will be able to climb on walls.
I just see it has strength (or dex in this case :P ) of your blow what what's at the point of the spear you still hit your enemy with precise hit.
Surprised nobody thought of this but you can also add poisons to your claws giving your unarmed strikes added versatility and leathality with options like Drow poison adding a small chance to one shot ko a target though I would avoid messing with contact poisons like crawler poison till your monk gains immunity.

If your thinking of Arcane Weapon then it wouldn't work. Its only for Simple or Martial weapons which an unarmed strike is not.
yea but those wouldn't be unarmed strikes needed for the bonus action attack. It would work for the regular attacks ((which a magical monk weapon would do the same)).
I think the issue is that it doesn't begin to make sense from a basic logic sense. If I have knife-hands and can hurt you up to four times as much as you can hurt me with a punch (assuming a 0 modifier), and then we both get super martial arts training... but I still have my knife-hands... how would I not do at least slightly more damage than you, with your silly meat-hands?
You've just started learning how to use your claws in a completely different way than the majority of your race uses them. As for comparing to a non-tabaxi monk, the claws will tend to do relatively shallow cuts, while the unarmed strikes will do relatively deep damage to the organs, netting roughly the same overall damage.
Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime. Oh, and it would be nice if you gave him a fishing rod.
I know I'm a little bit late to this topic, but I would like to add that if you create a new race and use the Tabaxi as the template, if you go to edit the claws action, you do see that they have the "affected by martial arts" box checked, so the claws do get the benefit of martial arts in D&D Beyond.

Am I correct in guessing that the same applies to a Dragonborn monk with the Dragon Hide feat?
Everything but the AC part of it.
That's what I meant. I forgot it also changed AC.
I figured but if I didn't clarify that someone would have jumped on me probably

I would allow steam powered boxing gloves as a 'weapon'. :D Or magical knuckle dusters.

You guys are forgetting that aarokroca have this racial feature too so @xix, they clearly have thought about it when first creating the monks

Agreed!!
That's an interesting combo! Nice👍

Wait but doesn’t it say that it replaces it so would the d4s stack or not because if they don’t that would ruin the combo
What if said tabaxi monk is also a barbarian?
What about it? If they're using Strength for the attacks they can add their Rage damage as normal, is that what you mean?

So if I'm understanding it right rage plus claws plus unarmed strike plus Flurry of Blows ... icky
