I am looking to be either a construct, astral elf or a bugbear.
Now obviously, construct would make the most sense thematically and visually and the beefy AC is great with a polearm, but I have a few different backstory options (such as being cursed) that would still allow me to be a different race. I am not power gamer, but I have lagged behind before and that kind of sucked. I have also only ever played as sword and board paladin's in the past. The bug bear reach and sneak are really appealing, but so is the astral elf teleport and cantrip (I would get sacred flame) and skill learning after trance.
If you really want to be a construct, there’s the auto gnome, but they’re size small, so would have problems with a polearm. You could ask your DM to let you be a medium one.
If you want to look like a construct without being one, there’s warforged.
If you’re asking which of those choices is best, they can all work. I’ll say don’t count on the bugbear sneak happening a lot. You’ll probably go heavy armor and have a low dex, so not a great initiative. I’m in a party now with 2 bugbears, and we’ve hit level 6, and I think, between the two of them, they’ve used it 3-4 times. Now, the reach, especially with a polearm, will be cool. The astral elf misty step will be good, though it will compete with the extra attack from PAM, I’m assuming you’re going to take PAM. The cantrip is nice, but really, you’ll want to get close so you can melee, and between misty step and a reach weapon, I wonder if you’ll use it often.
So I am going to be a scarecrow paladin, I am getting this mini for context https://www.brokenanvilminis.com/products/construct-warlock-bolger-the-dim-32mm

You might also wish to consider the reborn lineage.
