My Horizon Walker Ranger that I've been playing for a year or so has got to be my favourite character that I have ever played. I love the rich lore that you can tie really easily into it, the abilities are fun to use. That 1/SR limited Ethereal Step has been actually amazing as of late...
Horizon Walker is the subclass that is the most unique to the grizzled, frontier ranger we typically think about.
I play mine like some sort of interdimensional bounty hunter...very sci-fi. "Absorb Elements" is less a spell, and more a re-direction of elemental energy...the force damage is the Horizon Walker messing with physics.
I flavor him as this steampunk-esque traveler who just pops in and wonders what Plane he's ended up on this time.
Gloom Stalker is a close second...very scrappy. Very broody.
Of the choices there, it's easily Horizon Walker, followed closely behind by Monster Slayer.
I love the flavor of a plane-hopping adventurer, and the features have come in so handy so many times (that spell list is sexy, Portals are more common than you think, and Ethereal Step is just the bees knees.) It's easily my favorite subclass in the game. And don't get me started on Distant Strikes.
Monster Slayer is closely behind because growing up, I always wanted to be like Buffy. Or the Winchester brothers. Or the Belmonts. Or the Witcher. You get the point. Wrapping up a campaign with one now and I've consistently been the toughest PC to take out, all the while providing my team with valuable knowledge support.
(Not listed: Fey Wanderer. My other other favorite Ranger subclass. I like Planar stuff, okay?)
I will say even with the new options, I have more fun and interesting play with phb beastmaster.
I also believe in [RAWxRAI] it's provides more overall advantages to the party/player than almost any class without destroying game/adventure balances.
As the person who revived the thread I am curious how it happened. Was it a forum search? A Google search? Something else? Why this thread and not some of the others that are basically the same thing?
Another one.
I am yet to play a ranger, but I have a Gloom Stalker prepared as a backup for ToA. It is the only archetype that draws me in.

This thread is from 2018, before any of those classes were released.

Fey Wanderer!
I like them all but my top 3 in no particular order are hunter, Fey wanderer and horizon walker.
