Hey fellow Rangers. Playing a Halfling Gloomstalker Ranger in Rime of the Frostmaiden. As I'm new to the class (and play in the dark most of the time because of RotFM mechanics thus getting a fair number of critical hits thus far) I'm not sure I'm doing my critical hits correctly.
When I crit:
I double the shortbow damage to 2d6, then add my DEX modifier, but what I don't know is:
A) How does a crit impact "Favored Foe" if I have it up? Do I roll 2d4 instead of 1d4?
B) How does a crit impact "Zephyr Strike" if I choose to activate the additional 1d8 on a critical hit? Do I increase to 2d8?
C) To complicate matters, I've dipped in Rogue as no one had the ability to pick locks and I'm the only DEX based character. Do I double sneak attack rolled dice on a crit?
A, B, and C. All double. Both favored foe and zephyr strike are concentration so there is that to manage.
I played a gloomstalker in Rime and used favored foe a lot like a mini smite where I would wait for the crit and add it on when it happened. At one point I was rolling hot and the Paladin got jealous because he missed 3 straight rounds and I got two crits with favored foe.
There are some exceptions. For example if you had a 1d8 poison on your blade that required a save that would not double since that damage is related to the save not the crit.
Also, zephyr Strike doesn’t end when you use the Advantage and Bonus damage. Keep it on to be immune to Opp Attacks for the whole time 🙂
That would prevent the combination of hitting with Zephyr’s Strike and then switching to Favored Foe mid-attack to combo everything because as soon as a PC activates it the Zephyr Strike automatically drops since both require Concentration

Yes the player must choose what is more valuable comboing in favored foe or continuing to use the other features of Zephyr Strike. The defensive features for ZS would be my general preference, but sometimes you need that extra 2d4 because you critted.

Appreciate the help adventurers!!!

If it’s a die rolled when you crit it’s doubled. It’s only static numbers that aren’t
